53 results about "Orthopedic cast" patented technology

An orthopedic cast, or simply cast, is a shell, frequently made from plaster or fiberglass, encasing a limb (or, in some cases, large portions of the body) to stabilize and hold anatomical structures, most often a broken bone (or bones), in place until healing is confirmed. It is similar in function to a splint.

Orthopedic cast remover

Systems, apparatuses and methods are disclosed for an orthopedic cast remover. The cast remover includes a rotatable cutting assembly having first and second cutting wheel sandwiched between a smaller-sized hub, where the space between the first and second wheel defines a passage in which fractured material may pass. A shear is coupled to the cutting assembly and is positioned in the passage, where edges of the shear are configured to engage with each of the cutting wheels. During operation, rigid material, such as a cast shell, passes along a top surface of the shear and is fractured into a predetermined width at a point where the shear edges engage with the rotating cutting wheels. The fractured material is fed into the passage for easy removal.

Orthopedic cast and splint bandages with encapsulated hardening medium and method

A medical bandaging product that includes a flexible medical material including an elongate fabric, a reactive system, and microspheres. In certain aspects, a component of the reactive system is homogeneously impregnated into or coated throughout the flexible medical material without being encapsulated in the microspheres such that the reactive system remains stable and non-activated in the absence of an activating agent, and hardens upon activation by exposure to the activating agent to form a rigid, self-supporting structure. In this aspect, the microspheres are homogeneously impregnated into or coated throughout the flexible medical material, the microspheres encapsulate an activating agent and are configured to release the activating agent to form the rigid, self-supporting structure.

Aspects of the invention are directed to an apparatus comprising flexible tubing and a capsule. The flexible tubing is arranged in a matrix and encapsulates a first material. At the same time, the capsule is disposed within the flexible tubing, encapsulates a second material, and is breakable when subjected to at least one of impact and bending. The first material is segregated from the second material when the capsule is intact, but the first material mixes with the second material when the capsule is broken. Mixing of the first material and the second material forms a third material, the third material being substantially rigid. In one or more embodiments, the apparatus may be used as an orthopedic cast to stabilize and injury.

An orthopedic casting system that includes a cast tape having a moisture responsive resin therein, the tape being wound onto a tubular polymeric core for shipment and storage prior to use in forming an orthopedic cast. The tubular core has a wall with an inner and outer surface in a first position comprising a plurality of relatively shallow convex and concave portions that extend linearly of the core. Each of the concave portions provide a longitudinal trough along which water flows adjacent the inner wraps of the cast tape. The wall of core is flexibly resilient so that the upon application of a radial inward force on the cast tape and the core, the wall will flex to a second position in which the troughs are deepened. When the force is released the tubular core returns to substantially the first position.

Full Contact Orthopedic Cast and Method

A fully conformable, full contact orthopedic cast is shown for an affected area of a patient such as a limb or appendage requiring immobilization. A method for installing the cast on a patient is also shown. The cast includes an initially flexible bladder which is filled with a curable compound. The bladder may be conformably installed on the limb to be immobilized. Once the bladder is conformed to the limb, the curable compound is cured, as by the use of LED light, or UV-irradiation. The cast is easy to remove simply by unzipping a cross-linked closure strip, eliminating the need to use a saw to remove the cast.

A cast covering apparatus comprising a substantially tubular construction adapted to be disposed about an orthopedic leg cast on the user's leg and foot. The covering is constructed of an elastic textile having a smooth inner surface that prevents entanglement with typical surface projections of an orthopedic cast. At the end portion of the covering adapted to be disposed adjacent the user's toes, the covering extends into a toe opening and lower and upper toe panels. The lower toe panel extends across the sole of the user's foot. The upper toe panel extends over the instep of the user's foot, the opposed ends of the upper panel being sewed to the sides of the tubing. When the upper toe panel is adjacent the lower toe panel, the user's toes will be covered and when the upper toe panel is folded back along the user's instep, the toes are exposed.

Method and apparatus for orthopedic cast removal utilizing a rotary impact driver

An orthopedic cast removal tool and method uses an unmodified, typically cordless, rotary impact driver and a embedded wire to cut through an orthopedic cast for removal. By merging it with a slotted spacer block specifically for this cast removal purpose, an ergonomic tool is provided which allays fears of orthopedic patients. When rotating and encountering high resistance of the plaster or fiberglass material of the cast, the cordless rotary impact driver does not bog down; since it seamlessly engages impact action, which offers an order of magnitude or more torque multiplication via short frequent pulses (several per second) to overcome this torque resistance. Thus a high amount of torque with very little reaction force is made available to cut through a cast while affording the technician good control. The cast is cut very rapidly with little dust creation and no jostling of the patient.
