Methods and computer program products for determining risk of developing type 2 diabetes and other insulin resistance related disorders

Methods for assessing the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and other related disorders include obtaining an NMR derived reference spectrum for a known glucose concentration sample and storing this information as a reference standard. A patient blood sample is collected and NMR derived patient spectrums for the blood sample are obtained. The two NMR data sets (the reference and the patient) are compared and a glucose concentration is determined for the patient sample. The glucose concentration can be evaluated with a blood sample undergoing lipoprotein cholesterol evaluation. The NMR based test can be used to concurrently provide a glucose concentration and lipoprotein constituent values based on a single testing event. The disclosure also includes a multi-purpose test, i.e., a test which concurrently provides lipoprotein screening and coronary heart disease risk evaluation along with a diabetes screening and risk assessment for developing Type 2 diabetes. A method for assessing diabetes includes identifying the presence of diabetic dyslipidemia based on the values of predetermined NMR measured lipoprotein constituents.

Method for obtaining multi-dimensional proton density distributions from a system of nuclear spins

The present invention provides a method for obtaining a multi-dimensional proton density distribution from a system of nuclear spins. A plurality of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data is acquired from a fluid containing porous medium having a system of nuclear spins. A multi-dimensional inversion is performed on the plurality of nuclear magnetic resonance data using an inversion algorithm to solve a mathematical problem employing a single composite kernel to arrive at a multi-dimensional proton density distribution. Ideally, the mathematical problem can be cast in the form of a Fredholm integral of the first kind wherein a two or more kernels can be reduced to a single composite kernel for ease of solution. Preferably, a series of conventional CPMG pulse sequences, using a conventional NMR tool, can be used to excite the system of nuclear spins. The present invention further includes a regression method which reduces computational efforts by retaining only those grid points, and preferably their neighboring grid points, which have non-zero values, during subsequent iterations of solving for the multi-dimensional proton density distribution. This regression process can be repeated until the density distribution is satisfactorily smooth.

Estimating Adsorbed Gas Volume From NMR And Dielectric Logs

Adsorbed gas in a formation may be estimated. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data for a subsurface geological formation is obtained, and at least a portion of the NMR data is corrected to produce corrected NMR data. A NMR-based estimate of formation porosity is determined using the corrected NMR data. Dielectric permittivity data for the subsurface geological formation is obtained, and a dielectric permittivity-based estimate of the formation water-filled porosity is determined using the dielectric permittivity data. A gas volume is determined using the determined NMR-based estimate of the formation porosity and the determined dielectric permittivity-based estimate of the formation water-filled porosity. The gas volume may be determined by subtracting the determined dielectric permittivity-based estimate of the formation water-filled porosity from the determined NMR-based estimate of the formation porosity. The gas volume per unit volume of the formation may be determined using an equation of state.
