The IGMP snooping module creates several virtual local area networks (VLANs) based on the possible combinations of the plurality of ports, snoops IGMP report messages, determines port identifiers (IDs) of source ports of the IGMP report messages, and establishes a forwarding table according to the VLANs, the IGMP report messages, and the port IDs. The forwarding module adds VLAN tags to multicast packets according to the forwarding table. The switch forwards the multicast packets with the added VLAN tags to corresponding ports according to the VLAN tags. A method for forwarding multicast packets is also disclosed.

The present provides a method of dynamically managing multicast groups and allocating multicast service wavelengths for the highest channel efficiency. According to the present invention, the share indices of wavelengths of all multicast service groups, which employ broadcasting wavelengths and data wavelengths, are periodically ascertained on the basis of IGMP snooping-based technology in a WDM-PON. Based on the ascertainment results, if the channel share index of the group that employs the broadcasting wavelength is smaller than the channel share index of the group that employs the data wavelength, the share index of the wavelength of the multicast group that employs the broadcasting wavelength is maximized by dynamically changing allocation of the wavelength of the multicast group, so that a maximum multicast service can be provided within limited resources.

Delayed updating of forwarding databases for multicast transmissions over telecommunications networks

A switch (110R.3) uses a forwarding database (140F) to forward multicast packets. The switch participates in a multicast protocol (e.g. PIM) with other switches, and also uses a snooping database (e.g. for IGMP snooping) to learn about local group members, i.e. members for which the router serves as a local multicast router (e.g. the local members do not participate in the multicast protocol). When the switch learns of a local member of a multicast group, the switch updates the snooping database but may or may not install the snooping information in the forwarding database. Thus, the forwarding database is not necessarily provisioned for locally sourced data packets addressed to the group until receipt of a locally sourced data packet addressed to the group. If no such packets are received, the forwarding database is not provisioned for such packets, and therefore its size is reduced. Other features are also provided.

A technique for multicast switching in a distributed communication system having a plurality of cooperating modules enables a module to forward multicast packets associated with a multicast stream without using a centralized module or control logic by determining all network interfaces and remote modules associated with the multicast stream and forwarding multicast packets to only those network interfaces and remote modules associated with the multicast stream. IGMP snooping may be used to determine the network interfaces and remote modules associated with the multicast stream, and may also be used to determine host addresses, router addresses, and an IGMP version for each network interface and for each remote module. In order to generate IGMP messages, the module learns a multicast device address from received IGMP messages and uses the multicast device address to send the IGMP messages. The module decides whether to send IGMP version 1 messages or IGMP version 2 messages on a particular interface based upon the IGMP version of IGMP messages received over the interface.
