Elevator with a scissor lift mechanism and a spring member serving as virtual counter weight

An elevator includes an elevator car supported on a scissor assembly connected to a drive mechanism. The scissor assembly has two vertical scissor columns each comprising at least one pair of arms that are pivotally movable relative to one another. The drive mechanism mechanically interacts with the scissor assembly for applying a force in order to move the elevator car upwards by unfolding the scissor assembly. At least one spring element provides a spring force which acts on at least one of the arms to provide an upwards oriented counterforce on the elevator car.

Electromagnetic valve actuation with series connected electromagnet coils

Systems and methods for valve actuation use series-connected coils of upper and lower electromagnets acting as electromagnetic generators that attempt to maintain a constant magnetic flux, while their forces are essentially independent. A valve controller initiates valve actuation by reducing holding force of the holding electromagnet. As spring force begins to move an armature away from the holding electromagnet, the associated coil generates a voltage that attempts to maintain constant flux. This generated voltage causes a large increase in current that essentially transfers the flux to the other on-coming coil, which attracts and holds the armature against its associated spring force to open or close the valve. The internal voltage generated inside the two coils operates even if the coils are supplied with zero external voltage (shorted) to transfer stored energy directly between the coils. Energy may be transferred indirectly using an energy storage device.

Split-coil magnet arrangement with improved mechanical construction

A magnet arrangement with a magnet coil system (M) with two coil systems (C, D) that are each arranged in a container (B1, B2) positioned around the z axis and that are axially mechanically separated by a split (G), wherein each coil system (C, D) comprises a first (C1, D1) and a second coil section system (C2, D2), wherein the first coil section systems (C1, D1) are exposed to attractive magnetic forces showing toward the split (G) (KC1, KD1) and the second coil section systems (C2, D2), to repulsive magnetic forces showing away from the split (G) (KC2, KD2), and containing in the split (G) at least one mechanical structure that withstands compressive loads (E1, E2) and that supports a part of the attractive magnetic forces (KC1, KD1), is characterized in that, in the split (G) within the dimensions of the containers (B1, B2), a mechanical structure (H1) is provided that mechanically withstands tensile loads in the z direction, supports a part of the repulsive magnetic forces in the axial direction (KC2, KD2), is connected to the containers (B1, B2) and holds them together. With the inventive magnet arrangement, the magnetic forces can be better controlled. At the same time, a low-cost, space and weight saving assembly can be implemented.

Tube finning machine and method

This invention relates to a tube finning machine (10) and to a method of use thereof. Typically, the finned tubes will be for use in heat exchangers. In the present invention, the machine (10) has tensioning means (32, 44) for applying tension to the tubes (16) during the finning process, tension in the tubes reducing the likelihood that the tubes will buckle or deform during the process. Also, the invention discloses the use of a solid material introduced between the fins (22) to support the fins during the finning process, the solid material being removed after completion of the process. The solid material can be a granular material, or it can be a continuous material introduced (and removed) in its liquid state.

Multi-layer body with active mitigation for turbulence reduction

A multi-layered body system, including an inner body and an outer body, reduces the effects of turbulence on a vehicle by generating a counteracting force that stabilizes the inner body. During operation of the vehicle, the inner body may be electromagnetically levitated within the outer body using mitigation devices, such as powered electromagnets. Such electromagnetic levitation may cause the outer body to absorb turbulent force, which may be absorbed throughout the outer body and / or cause the outer body to move (e.g., toward the inner body). The system may include sensors that detect turbulent force imposed on the outer body. A computer may calculate a counteracting force that should be applied based on the detected turbulent force, and cause a mitigating device to output the counteracting force. The counteracting force may be provided to resume EM levitation within operational parameters.
