Syringe with reciprocating, leak-proof needle guard

A leak proof safety shield / guard for a syringe is herein disclosed. The shield / guard provides for not only protection of the syringe from a damage and abuse in the storage and handling, but also protects the health care professional from contact with the used needle and any of the tissues or fluids adherent thereto. Moreover, any and all fluids that are initially contained within the syringe, or subsequently collected from a patient, are also isolated from inadvertent discharge or loss. This device achieves such objectives by providing a sealed protective guard that retains its integrity subsequent to use of the syringe. Additional enhancements to the device of this invention include a locking mechanism that prevents re-use of the syringe; and, additionally causes the syringe to be rendered physically inoperative.

Cap for a container

Cap for a container, including a body having an inlet, a spout and a passageway therebetween. The cap also includes a valve movable between a first position wherein the passageway is blocked and a second position wherein the passageway is at least partly unblocked, the valve being biased towards the first position. Furthermore, the cap includes an actuator mounted to the body and engaging the valve. Selective control of the state of the valve is associated with movement of the actuator in a different direction than for securing the valve in the open position. The combination of movements required to lock the valve in the open position is sufficiently complex to reduce its probability of opening unintentionally. Meanwhile, the combination of movements is simple enough to be performed by a single finger.

Pressure relief system for gun fired cannon cartridges

A high velocity munition comprises a projectile, mounted on a cartridge case, that can be fired from an automatic cannon or weapon. During storage or transport an IM venting device included in the cartridge case prevents the propellant charge from firing the projectile, leaving the cartridge damaged, but intact upon premature ignition. The IM vent exhaust channel is filled with a solid fusible material that melts at a lower temperature than the ignition temperatures of the igniter (or primer) and the propellant charge of the projectile. At least one non-fusible, ruptureable member is included in the IM vent channel and positioned to provide structural integrity to the fusible material in the channel. Alternatively or in addition to the fusible material, a shape memory alloy ring surrounds the igniter (or primer) and separates from the cartridge when the cartridge reaches a temperature that causes auto-ignition.
