In order to enhance the usability of a write-once recording medium, the recording medium is provided with an ordinary recording/reproduction area, an alternate area, a first alternate-address management information area and a second alternate-address management information area. In addition, written/unwritten state indication information is recorded in a predetermined area. The second alternate-address management information area is an area allowing alternate-address management information recorded therein to be renewed by adding alternate-address management information to the area. Alternate-address management information recorded in the second alternate-address management information area includes information recorded in a first information format and information recorded in a second information format. The first information format shows an alternate source address and an alternate destination address for each data unit. On the other hand, the second information format shows an alternate source address and an alternate destination address for a group of a plurality of physically continuous data units. The second information format is used as a format for effectively carrying out an alternate-address process on such a group of data units. All alternate-address management information is recorded in the first alternate-address management information area in the first information format.

Method and apparatus for improved address mark detection

A method and apparatus are disclosed for detecting an address mark in a data stream having a preamble followed by the address mark. The end of the preamble is detected in the data stream, which is then used to open a window to search for the address mark. If the address mark is not detected during the window, the search for the address mark is restarted. The window can have a duration based on a length of the address mark. The address mark can be, for example, a servo address mark following a servo preamble or a read address mark following a read preamble. The preamble can have a 2T pattern and the preamble can be detected by determining if energy associated with a 2T frequency is greater than energy associated with a non-2T frequency. The end of the preamble can be performed by an EndOf2T detector that detects a break in an expected bit pattern.

The lead in area has a recordable portion where an information signal can be recorded. The recordable portion of the lead in area has an identifier I1 defining a recording speed applicable when recording an information signal in the data area. The first recording layer is formed with a continuous first microscopic pattern of grooves that is different from the second microscopic pattern. Both sidewalls of raised portions of the first and second microscopic patterns are formed with wobbling so as to be parallel with each other. Auxiliary information and a reference clock is recorded on these sidewalls alternately and continuously.

Wobble demodulator and wobble demodulation method

A wobble demodulator for reproducing digital information from an optical recording medium in which a track is formed in accordance with a wobble signal that is MSK-modulated so as to contain the digital information by a carrier signal with a predetermined frequency and a sine wave signal with a frequency different from that of the carrier signal, includes: a wobble signal detector for detecting a wobble signal of the track from the optical recording medium; a wobble PLL for detecting the carrier signal based on the wobble signal detected by the wobble signal detector; a multiplier for multiplying the carrier signal detected by the wobble PLL by the wobble signal detected by the wobble signal detector and outputting a multiplied output; a MSK detector for detecting a MSK modulation mark having a phase or a frequency different from that of the carrier signal, based on an integrated value obtained by integrating the multiplied output from the multiplier on a predetermined section basis; and a MSK synchronization detector for detecting a synchronization position with respect to the digital information, based on the MSK modulation mark detected by the MSK detector, wherein the MSK detector compares a continuous predetermined number of the integrated values with a first threshold value for detecting a central portion of the MSK modulation mark, a second threshold value for detecting leading and trailing edges of the MSK modulation mark, and a third threshold value for detecting non-modulated portions before and after the MSK modulation mark, and detects the MSK modulation mark based on a pattern of a comparison result.

Disk drive and detection method using pre-pit detection and push-pull signal generation

A push pull signal is detected from a disk-shaped storage medium on which wobbling grooves are formed as recording tracks and address information is recorded by forming pre-pits on lands between adjacent grooves. The detected push-pull signal is compared with a reference voltage thereby generating a land pre-pit detection signal. Of pulses included in the land pre-pit detection signal, those pulses having a small pulse width are regarded as noise pulses and removed thereby obtaining a corrected land pre-pit detection signal. The number of pulses included in the land pre-pit detection signal is counted, and the reference voltage is controlled in accordance with the counted number of pulses.
