Methods are provided for making a composite material that includes (a) providing at least one sheet which includes woven or non-woven glass fibers, carbon fibers, aramid fibers, or nanoscale fibers; and (b) stitching a plurality of stitches of a thermally conductive fiber through the at least one sheet in a Z-axis direction to form paths of higher conductivity through the sheet of material to increase its thermal conductivity in the Z-axis.

This invention pertains to the art of methods and apparatuses associated with measuring and profile tools utilized in crafts, particularly in the design of quilts. More specifically, the invention provides an improved measuring tool that incorporates a variety of undulating profiles and is useful in the construction of quilts of other items of craftsmanship that incorporate non-linear, undulating, curving or wavy profiles.

A method of applying stitching to an interior component is provided herein. The method including the steps of: a) penetrating an outer skin layer, a substrate layer and an intermediary layer of the interior component with an awl to form a piercing therethrough; b) retracting the awl from the outer skin layer, the substrate layer and the intermediary layer; c) inserting a needle through the piercing through the substrate layer, the intermediary layer and the outer skin layer to grasp a thread positioned on the outer skin layer; d) pulling the thread through the outer skin layer, the intermediary layer and the substrate layer; e) looping the thread with a previous stitch passed through the outer skin layer, the intermediary layer and the substrate layer; f) advancing the interior component to another position; and g) repeating steps a-f until a predetermined amount of stitches are applied to the interior component.

A system and method for assembling a prosthetic heart valve, including a procedure for tightly wrapping fabric around a heart valve support stent having a highly contoured undulating outflow edge. A mandrel retains tension without manual assistance in a tubular length of fabric wrapped over the support stent, and includes relatively axially movable inner and outer clamping mechanisms and a pedestal tube on which the support stent rests. The clamping mechanisms include clamps that pull the fabric only in the support stent cusps. The mandrel assembly may be placed in a chuck of a sewing machine system for automatically forming the seam. A small shuttle with bobbin thread reciprocates within a channel inside of the support stent and cooperates with the sewing machine needle to form a lock-stitch in the fabric tube. The mechanization of the fabric covering procedure greatly enhances manufacturing throughput and reduces ergonomic strain on workers.

A coverlet includes a first back layer having edges, a second middle layer having edges and a batting layer having edges and being disposed between and quilted to the first and second layers, A third face layer has edges, covers the second layer and is stitched to the first and second layers and to the batting layer. A binding, preferably between ½ and 1 inch in width, covers all of the edges. The first, second and third layers are all formed of the same fabric, especially a lyocell blend. The batting layer is preferably a lyocell blend and in particular a blend with polyester. A method of producing the coverlet is also provided.

A combined template and ruler for use in quilting is formed from a rigid plastic material and includes a plurality of spaced slots that correspond to cutting and sewing lines that are marked on layers of fabric using the template.
