Remote database technique

Systems, methods, software applications and virtual machines for creating, holding, referencing and / or accessing data objects from an application on a remote machine. The system allows a software application to read, write and perform transactions using data stored in one or more distributed databases. Methods are described for accessing a data object of a resource from an application located remotely from the resource. Methods are also described for issuing and servicing a method call from an application to a data object in a remote database. A virtual machine is yet further described for running a software application implemented using an object-oriented language for performing an operation on a plurality of data objects of a remote virtual machine. Still further described is a software application implemented using an object-oriented language to instantiate, store and access data objects on a remote virtual machine.

Network architecture for remote robot with interchangeable tools

ActiveUS20060074525A1Slow feedback loopLess time-critical decisionProgramme controlProgramme-controlled manipulatorDigital feedbackAuto-configuration
Systems, methods and devices for the remote control of a robot which incorporates interchangeable tool heads. Although applicable to many different industries, the core structure of the system includes a robot with a tool head interface for mechanically, electrically and operatively interconnecting a plurality of interchangeable tool heads to perform various work functions. The robot and tool head may include several levels of digital feedback (local, remote and wide area) depending on the application. The systems include a single umbilical cord to send power, air, and communications signals between the robot and a remote computer. Additionally, all communication (including video) is preferably sent in a digital format. Finally, a GUI running on the remote computer automatically queries and identifies all of the various devices on the network and automatically configures its user options to parallel the installed devices. Systems according to the preferred embodiments find particular application in the pipeline arts. For example, interchangeable tool heads may be designed to facilitate inspection, debris clearing, cleaning, relining, lateral cutting after relining, mapping, and various other common pipeline-related tasks.

Methods and apparatus for communicating changes between a user-interface and an executing application, using property paths

A method for detecting a change in a current state of a property associated with an element of a user-interface includes the step of associating the element with a property path including a concatenation of a plurality of identifiers defining a path through a plurality of application components to a property at the end of the concatenation. The property path is mapped to a current state of the property at the end of the path. A request is received, from a local machine, for a change in a state of a property mapped to one of said plurality of concatenated identifiers defining the property path. The request for the change is sent to a remote machine. The remote machine applies the change. The local machine updates the element of the user-interface associated with the property path responsive to the change and the received regeneration.

Modular electrotactile system and method

This application relates to an electrotactile system and method for delivering tactile stimuli to a skin surface of a user. The system includes one or more electrotactile modules each comprising an array of electrodes electrically connected to an integrated circuit. Each integrated circuit has data processing and current driving capability. The current delivered from the integrated circuit to each electrode is relatively small, preferably less than 4 milliamps. The modules may be connected to a flexible PC board by spring-loaded connectors. In one embodiment a plurality of electrotactile modules may be grouped together to from an electrotactile device. Multiple electrotactile devices may in turn be deployed as part of a wearable article for use in virtual reality, telepresence, telerrobotics or other haptic feedback applications. The system is capable receiving and transmitting tactile data via a communication link, such as a conventional data network. For example, tactile data can be transmitted in a scalable streaming format from a remote site to the system via a data network. The system may form part of a virtual reality entertainment application.

Systems and Methods for Secure Handling of Secure Attention Sequences

A method for authenticating, by a trusted component, a user of a desktop appliance to a remote machine includes executing, by a desktop appliance, a user interaction component, responsive to receiving a secure attention sequence from a user. The user interaction component receives authentication credentials associated with the user. The desktop appliance transmits, to a broker service, the received authentication credentials. The broker service authenticates the user, responsive to the received authentication credentials. The broker service transmits, to a remote machine, authentication data associated with the received authentication credentials. The remote machine authenticates the user, responsive to the received authentication data. The remote machine provides, to the desktop appliance, access to a resource requested by the user. In another aspect, a trusted component provides, to a user of a desktop appliance, access to secure desktop functionality provided by a remote machine.

Personalizing user interfaces across operating systems

A user-centered interface agent eases the problem of unfamiliar user interfaces on host computers. The agent operates by learning user preferences and typical behaviors and predicting the user's preferred user interface for different types of host computers. Most of the agent's learning is through observation, requiring minimal-initialization by the user. The interface agent consists of a learning program which operates on the user's primary computer, a shadow program which is installed on a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), and a remote program which operates on host computers. The role of the PDA includes the transfer of data between the primary and remote machines, and the PDA can also be the user's primary computer. On the primary computer, the agent learns a user's preference by observing the user's actions. The user may run agent-training module or directly query and modify the agent's current state of knowledge, but the user is not forced to explicitly teach the agent. The learning algorithm may be statistical, rule-based, case-based, neural network, or employ any other technique for reasoning under uncertainty. The automated way of reaching a usable configuration has a particular advantage for individuals with disabilities who require configuration before they can use a new computer system.
