It includes a radiating first element having a meander geometry being relatively flat and without any complete loops or turns, a radiating second element having a meander, helical, rectangular or straight geometry. The first and second elements interact to provide one or more modes of antenna operation and the first element feeds the second element in at least one operational mode. Further, an extendable and retractable feature of the second element is disclosed, as well as an antenna adapter for external connection of the inventive antenna means to an auxiliary antenna.

Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems are able to provide wireless communications at increased data rates. These systems involve using a plurality of antennas on both the transmitter and receiver and the problem of how to accommodate such structures in user terminals, which are often required to be hand held then arises. An antenna arrangement which is suitable for MIMO communications and which can be incorporated into a user terminal such as a personal digital assistant (PDA) is described. A pair of co-polarised umbrella monopoles and a slot antenna are incorporated into a flap which extends at approximately 90° to the body of the PDA. A fourth monopole is mounted and protrudes from the PDA itself.

An antenna array formed on a deformable dielectric material or substrate includes a center element and plurality of radial elements extending from a center hub. In the operative mode, the radial elements are folded upwardly into an approximately vertical position, with the center element at the center of the hub and the radial elements circumferentially surrounding the center element. In one embodiment the center element serves an active element of the antenna array and the radial elements are controllable in a directive or reflective state to effect a directive beam pattern from the antenna array. When not in use, the antenna elements are deformed into a plane and can therefore be integrated into a housing for compact storage. In a phased array embodiment, the center element is absent and the plurality of radial elements, are controllable to steer the antenna beam.

By collapsing, invention may be easily carried or shipped in a compact container. May be used in remote locations with simple or automated setup and orientation. Azimuth is adjusted by rotating an antenna in relation to a positioner base and elevation is adjusted by rotating an elevation motor coupled with the antenna. Algorithms used for search including Clarke Belt fallback, transponder / beacon searching switch, azimuth priority searching and tracking including uneven re-peak scheduling yield lower power usage. Orientation aid via user interface allows for smaller azimuth motor, simplifies wiring and lowers weight. Tilt compensation, bump detection and failure contingency provide robustness.

A PDA use antenna device comprising a first antenna for use in a first use configuration, a second antenna for use in a second use condition, a control part which discriminates between said first use condition and said second use condition and outputs a discrimination signal and a antenna selection device which selects which one of said first antenna and said second antenna should be used on the basis of the discrimination signal of said control part and connects the selected antenna to the wireless circuit. By selecting and using the optimal antenna for each use condition, use conditions can be easily discriminated. Moreover improved and stable antenna reliability can be ensured irrespective of use condition.

The invention provides a combination piece of metal and plastic, which comprises a metal body and a plastic part, wherein the metal body and the plastic part are formed integrally by adopting embedded forming technology; at least one positioning structure is formed on a combine part of the metal body and the plastic part; a material of the metal body is selected from one of a magnesium alloy, an aluminum alloy and a titanium alloy; and a material of the plastic part is selected from one of a liquid crystal high polymer, polyphenylene sulphide and polybutylene terephthalate. The invention also provides a manufacture method for the combination piece of the metal and the plastic. The combination piece of the metal and the plastic has the advantages of high strength, difficult deformation and cracking and adaptability in thinning design.

Pedestrian transportable antenna systems can include an antenna mount and an antenna for satellite based or other communication mounted on a top face of the antenna mount. A bottom face of the antenna mount may be attached to a bendable rigid rod that is sufficiently rigid to provide support for the mounted antenna such that a user can walk around with the antenna deployed while the bendable rigid rod of the antenna system is mounted to the user's back (e.g., mounting into a back portion of a vest or flak jacket). The bendable rigid rod is sufficiently rigid to support the antenna without allowing the rod to “flop” over under the load of the antenna. At the same time, the rod is sufficiently bendable so as to permit the system to be drawn closer into a user's body when the antenna is not deployed (e.g., while stepping into a vehicle).

A multi-function, portable, electronic device includes a housing, a processor located within the housing and a memory in communication with the processor. The electronic device includes a display in communication with the processor and positioned on a surface of the housing. The electronic device includes an apparatus for performing a first function, and an apparatus for performing a second function. One of the functions includes a navigational component. The navigational component includes an antenna attached to the housing and movable between a stowed position and a signal acquisition position. A detection mechanism indicates the antenna is in the signal acquisition position. Embodiments of the portable antenna positioner described provide a lightweight, collapsible and rugged antenna positioner for use in receiving low earth orbit, geostationary and geosynchronous satellite transmissions. By collapsing the antenna positioner, it may be readily carried by one person or shipped in a compact container. The antenna positioner may be used in remote locations with simple or automated setup and orientation. In order to operate the apparatus, azimuth is adjusted by rotating an antenna in relation to a positioner base and elevation is adjusted by rotating an elevation motor coupled with the antenna. The apparatus may update ephemeris data via satellite, may comprise a built-in receiver and may couple with a second positioner base comprising cryptographic, router or power functionality. The apparatus may comprise storage devices such as a hard drive or flash disk for storing data to and from at least one satellite.

Provides an antenna for a radio telephone whereby, in a state wherein the rod-shaped antenna is extended to outside the case of the radio telephone, the effects of the human body are negligible and emission of radio waves at an angle close to the horizontal direction is possible, and in a state wherein the rod-shaped antenna is retracted within the case, no unwanted radiation is produced. For this purpose, a helical antenna 20 having an electrical length of lambd / 4 and a rod-shaped antenna 10 extendable and retractable with respect to the case through the hollow central portion of the helical antenna 20 and having an electrical length of about 3lambd / 8 and inductive reactance are electrically coupled by means of an electrostatic coupling portion 30 having capacitive reactance such that, in the state wherein the rod-shaped antenna 10 is extended from the case 50, the inductive reactance of the rod-shaped antenna 10 is cancelled out. The length of the bottom portion 12a of the connecting member 12 is set to a length such that when the rod-shaped antenna 10 is retracted within the case 50, the bottom portion 12a of the connecting member 12 passes through the helical coil 12 over the entire length thereof, severing electrical coupling between the helical antenna 20 and the rod-shaped antenna 10.

A concealed antenna is applied to a notebook computer. The notebook computer includes a displaying module and a base module. The displaying module has a hinge, and the base module includes a region for inserting the hinge, a motherboard, a transmission line, and a wireless module. The motherboard includes a positive region and a negative region. The concealed antenna includes a feed-in end and a ground end for respectively electrically coupling with the positive region and the negative region. The concealed antenna, configured in the region for inserting the hinge and installed on the motherboard, transmits antenna signals to the wireless module via the transmission line.

The invention aims at providing a communication terminal capable of suppressing degradation of an antenna gain irrespective of whether the casing of the communication terminal is opened or closed. The communication terminal includes a hinge for coupling in a foldable manner a first casing member and a second casing member, each including conductors such as a first printed board and a second printed board. In close proximity to the hinge in the second casing member is provides a second antenna. The hinge includes a first rotation axis composed of a conductive metal material working as an axis of rotation of two casing members in opposite directions and a second rotation axis composed of a conductive metal material working as an axis of rotation in a direction orthogonal to the direction of rotation about the first rotation axis. The communication device (100) including a signal source (260,425,635), a main housing (105) and a movable flip housing (110) moveably coupled to the main housing (105) through a hinge assembly (125). The hinge assembly (125) being comprised of a hinge shaft, a first knuckle (805) coupled to one side of the hinge shaft, and a second knuckle (810) coupled to an opposing side of the hinge shaft. The antenna system (200,400,500,600) includes at least one of the knuckles of the hinge assembly (125).

There is provided a radio apparatus having a built-in type antenna of a broad frequency range in a thin case. The radio apparatus comprises a fist case containing a first printed circuit board (PCB) and a second case containing a second PCB. The two cases are joined by a hinge part. A radio circuit is contained in the first or the second case or the hinge part, and is connected to a first end of a feeder line including a signal line and a return line. A first antenna element formed as a printed pattern of the first PCB is connected, by a first conductor, to the signal line at a feeding point, i.e., a second end of the feeder line. A wireless communications card for use with an electronic device includes a frame and an antenna system. The frame is configured for removable installation in the electronic device. The antenna system includes first and second antennas each integral with the frame.
