Secondary battery with auxiliary electrode

The present invention includes three-dimensional secondary battery cells comprising an electrolyte, a cathode, an anode, and an auxiliary electrode. The cathode, the anode, and the auxiliary electrode have a surface in contact with the electrolyte. The anode and the cathode are electrolytically coupled. The auxiliary electrode is electrolytically coupled and electrically coupled to at least one of the anode or the cathode. Electrically coupled means directly or indirectly connected in series by wires, traces or other connecting elements. The average distance between the surface of the auxiliary electrode and the surface of the coupled cathode or the coupled anode is between about 1 micron and about 10,000 microns. The average distance means the average of the shortest path for ion transfer from every point on the coupled cathode or anode to the auxiliary electrode.

Electrically rechargeable, metal anode cell and battery systems and methods

The invention provides for a fully electrically rechargeable metal anode battery systems and methods of achieving such systems. An electrically rechargeable metal anode cell may comprise a metal electrode, an air contacting electrode, and an aqueous electrolyte separating the metal electrode and the air contacting electrode. In some embodiments, the metal electrode may directly contact the liquid electrolyte and no separator or porous membrane is needed between the air contacting electrode and the electrolyte. Rechargeable metal anode cells may be electrically connected to one another through a centrode connection where a metal electrode of one cell and an air contacting electrode of a second cell are electrically connected. Air tunnels or pathways may be provided between individual metal anode cells arranged in a stack. In some embodiments, an electrolyte flow management system may also be provided to maintain liquid electrolyte at constant levels during charge and discharge cycles.

Apparatus and method for reliably supplying electrical energy to an electrical system

The instant invention is directed to a multiple battery system and auxiliary battery attachment system. The invention provides a battery housing having a common positive terminal and a common negative terminal coupled to an electrical system. A main battery having a main positive output and a main negative output is also provided, together with an auxiliary battery having an auxiliary positive output and an auxiliary negative output. A switching device is provided with at least two operating positions. The two operating positions selectively engage the main battery and the auxiliary battery. In the first operating position of the at least two operating positions the common positive terminal is coupled to the main positive output and the auxiliary positive output, a one-way charging circuit preceding the auxiliary battery. In the second operating position of the at least two operating positions the common positive terminal is coupled to the main circuit and, thereon, to the auxiliary positive at a point beyond the one-way charging circuit to the auxiliary battery positive. This isolates the main battery during situations where the main battery is discharged, but allows the auxiliary battery to receive a full charge during normal operations to keep it prepared for any emergency.

Method for charging/discharging positive electrode active material in a lithium secondary battery, charging/discharging system provided with lithium secondary battery and vehicle, electronic device, battery module, battery pack

In a charge / discharge method for a positive-electrode active material in a lithium secondary battery, the lithium secondary battery includes a positive electrode containing a positive-electrode active material capable of occluding and releasing lithium ions, a negative electrode containing a negative-electrode active material capable of occluding and releasing lithium ions, a separator located between the positive electrode and the negative electrode, and an electrolyte having a lithium ion conductivity; and the positive-electrode active material contains a nickel-type lithium-containing complex oxide. The positive electrode, which has been charged, is discharged until having a first potential VDp1 which is no less than 2.7 V and no more than 3.4 V on a lithium metal basis, and then the discharge is finished. Owing to this, the charge / discharge cycle life can be improved while the capacity of the lithium secondary battery is secured.
