A surgical device is disclosed. The surgical device includes: a jaw assembly including a first jaw and a second jaw moveable relative to the first jaw; and an articulating assembly removably coupled to the proximal end of the jaw assembly, the articulating including a distal joint member, a proximal joint member, and a pivot pin fixedly coupled to the distal joint member and rotatably coupled to the proximal joint member, wherein the jaw assembly and the distal joint member define a first longitudinal axis extending between a proximal end of the jaw assembly and a distal end of the distal joint member, and the proximal joint member defines a second longitudinal axis. The surgical device also includes a first rotatable drive shaft including a first gear element meshingly engaged with a pivoting gear element fixedly coupled to the pivot pin, wherein rotational and longitudinal movement of the first rotatable drive shaft pivots the jaw assembly relative to the proximal joint member about a pivot axis defined by the pivot pin that is perpendicular to the first and second longitudinal axes.

Modular adjustable prophylactic hip orthosis and adduction/abduction joint

A hip orthosis includes a hip engaging unit that can be secured to the contours of a human hip. An appendant orthotic member is formed to extend diagonally about and to be fixed to a human appendage. A connector assembly, with a support plate with a curved configuration at an anchor location to permit adjustment, interconnects the hip engaging member and the appendant member and includes an articulated joint member to control flexion, extension, abduction and adduction. The joint members can include an adjustable linkage system extending across and connected to both sides of the articulated joint. A first link member can be adjusted in length to control the movement of the articulated joint. An adjustable hinge member having a rotational axis which is offset by approximately 90° from a rotational axis of the articulate joint can be set to limit a range of flexion, while movement of the articulated joint provides either a controlled abduction or adduction movement Alternatively, the articulated joint can be formed by a roller and cam arrangement.

Mechanical joints for subsea equipment

A mechanical connector for oil and gas well apparatus applies a predetermined preload across the connection, the preload being adapted to accommodate relatively large dimensional tolerances in the loadpath of the connector preload by placing a component with a low modulus of elasticity within that load path. In one embodiment, the connector comprises fingers (3) of a pair of pipe flanges (1, 1′), a stationary retainer ring (14) against which a finger reaction surface (13) is pressed, a runner ring (15) located outside the fingers and movable lengthwise along the fingers by an actuator (16), the retainer ring and the runner ring having an elasticity that is so large that deviations in their elongation only have a small influence on the retainer ring and the runner ring radial pressure against the fingers and clamping forces of the fingers against the flanges. In a second embodiment, the connector comprises dogs (103, FIG. 4) located around the circumference of a first tubular joint component, a follower located outside the dogs (103) and movable axially of the dogs, the low elastic modulus component being a ring located in the loadpath below the dogs. In a third embodiment, the connector comprises a lockdown mechanism acting between nested components, the low elastic modulus component being an insert comprising a load shoulder transferring loads between the nested components.

A brace for stabilizing a joint such as a knee disposed between a first and second limb structure. The brace includes upper and lower frame members, cuffs for encompassing a portion of each limb structure, and a uniting pivoting joint member. The joint member includes two opposing pivoting assemblies, with each including a forward and a rearward arm member each having upper and lower ends spherically-pivotally connected to the upper and lower frame members for enabling multiple angular relationships. The pivoting assembly can include a limb extension regulator, preferably a cable, extending between the rearward arm member and the upper frame member to permit infinitely adjustable extendability of the brace-bearing limb. Most preferably, a visible measurement scale is provided for precise extension distances.
