IEC 61850 is an international standard defining communication protocols for intelligent electronic devices at electrical substations. It is a part of the International Electrotechnical Commission's (IEC) Technical Committee 57 reference architecture for electric power systems. The abstract data models defined in IEC 61850 can be mapped to a number of protocols. Current mappings in the standard are to MMS (Manufacturing Message Specification), GOOSE (Generic Object Oriented Substation Event), SMV (Sampled Measured Values), and soon to Web Services. These protocols can run over TCP/IP networks or substation LANs using high speed switched Ethernet to obtain the necessary response times below four milliseconds for protective relaying.

The description file includes a section which indicates which GOOSE message the intelligent electronic device should receive. In yet another embodiment, the description file includes a section which is capable of linking to logic functions of the intelligent electronic device for performing programmable data binding or dynamic data binding. A configuration tool is further provided for editing and creating such description files. A method for selectively receiving messages from an intelligent electronic device configured in accordance with the IEC-61850 standard is also described herein, along with a method for optimizing file space and improving execution speed of an intelligent electronic device configured in accordance with the IEC-61850 standard.

It is concerned with the verification of the configuration of a first Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) that is part of a Substation Automation (SA) system and that has initially been configured to perform measurement, protection and / or control functions in accordance with a substation configuration specification. Configuration information is first read from an internal server of the first IED and transformed according to a dedicated data model. Related information is then read from e.g. a second IED that has initially been configured to perform the same functions as the first IED, or from a Substation Configuration Description (SCD) file, and likewise transformed. The transformed data is then compared in order to identify discrepancies or inconsistencies and to resolve errors introduced by the IED configuration process.

Its hardware is based on embedded system technology, which is low cost, small size. Engineering staff only adjust configuration files; can realize conversion between IEC 60870-5-103 protocol agreement and the IEC 61850, instead of changing of Gateway hardware and software system and changes in code.

Method and system for bi-directional data conversion between IEC 61970 and IEC 61850

A system and method of converting a file is disclosed that is based on a first standard to a file that is based on a second standard. The concerned standards can be IEC 61970 and IEC 61850 or their equivalents. For conversion, a file based on IEC 61970 is coded according to CIMXML (RDF Schema), and a file in IEC 61850 is coded according to SCL (XML Schema). The data in each file is modelled by using a UML model for the corresponding standard. The method includes the automatic generation of mapping rules that can be based on the UML models of the two standards and the mappings between the two standards. The method further converts the identified elements by using the generated mapping rules. Finally, post-processing rules can be applied to the converted elements to generate the file, based on the second standard.

System level testing for substation automation systems

The invention is concerned with the testing of system level functionality involving several Protection. Control and Measurement (PCM) Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) of a Substation Automation (SA) system for IEC 61850 compliant substations. An extensive testing of all conceivable control or protection functions / applications of an extended SA system comprising a large number of IEDs with a multitude of configurations is facilitated by simulating at least one of the IEDs in a testing device. Hence, only a limited number of IEDs are physically present as individual devices in a test environment, the behaviour of at least one further IED being simulated by a dedicated testing device with appropriate data processing means. The testing device sends network messages indicative of the behaviour of the simulated IED according to its communication and device configuration over a substation communication network to the physically present IED to be tested. The proper working of the configured IED functions, i.e. the expected correct action as triggered by the testing device, are then verified by analyzing the device's response over its analogue and digital outputs, as well as its response over the communication network. Preferably, the set-up for SA system testing is automatically detected and configured.

The present invention is concerned with substation automation (SA) systems, in particular with a method and system for configuring an International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61850 standard-compliant Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) 104 in SA system 100. Proxy IED 104 is a NCC gateway device enhanced for converting data between non-IEC 61850 and IEC 61850 communication protocols. Proxy IED 104 is configured, based on a set of mappings, which are coded in the SA configuration description (SCD) file. The SCD file includes mappings for data conversion between non- IEC 61850 and IEC 61850 communication protocols.

On-line monitoring method of state of relay protection equipment

The invention discloses an on-line monitoring method of a state of relay protection equipment, which ensures a content of self-inspection information provided by the relay protection equipment. The method comprises the following steps of: classifying self-inspection information; adding additional information and content thereof of each kind of self-inspection information, which is capable of reflecting the influence degree to the equipment state; collecting the self-inspection information provided by the relay protection equipment through using the IEC-61850 communication standard adopted by the communication network in a transformer substation by a state overhaul host, and building a static and dynamic self-inspection information database of the relay protection equipment; and carrying out on-line monitoring on the state of the equipment by using a general state mathematic model of the relay protection equipment in real time so as to provide the guidance for the state overhaul of therelay protection equipment. Through the on-line monitoring method of the state of the relay protection equipment, the state of the relay protection equipment can be monitored on line, the reliabilityand the usability of the relay protection equipment can be improved, the service life of the relay protection equipment can be prolongged, the operation and overhaul expenses can be reduced and the economic benefit can be increased.

The invention provides an IEC 61850 universal database information model and a design method for an interface of the IEC 61850 universal database information model. The database model consists of an information model, an equipment model and an application model, wherein the information model obeys IEC 61850; the equipment model obeys IEC 61970; the information model comprises engineering instantiation configuration information of intelligent electronic equipment; and the engineering instantiation configuration information comprises a model type database table, a data type database table, a template type database table and a communication type database table. By a database design with three layers of frameworks, so that a standard model is multiplexed; a database can be automatically established by directly adopting a security coding device (SCD) model file, and an incidence relation among the information model, the equipment model and the application model can be automatically constructed; therefore, the engineering debugging period and the maintenance cost can be obviously reduced; the database information model based on the universal data type is constructed; a search mode quoted by a data object based on a character string format is designed; moreover, an open access interface is supplied; and the IEC 61850 universal database information model is suitable for different database platforms.
