An air-cargo container is equipped with a modular refrigerating unit, which is attachable into the container shell in substantially one piece. Preferably, a control unit for the modular refrigerating unit is also provided as one single module. The refrigerating unit comprises the entire enclosure of an airflow path around an icebox, and is preferably mounted at a small distance from the wall and ceiling of the container. Simple positioning elements facilitate the actual positioning and mounting procedure. The refrigerating unit preferably comprises sealing flanges which during mounting by the positioning elements automatically are fitted into elements at the container wall. A manufacturing method is also disclosed, which comprises mounting of modular units into a shell of an air-cargo container. The mounting is preferably performed by using positioning elements, which guides the modular units into the proper positions.

An air cargo container includes a relatively-rigid housing defining an air-tight interior space of nominal volume within which to receive cargo. The housing substantially maintains the nominal volume of the interior space upon pressurizing or evacuating the interior space relative to ambient pressure, whereby a differential interior pressure is achieved before loading the container aboard an aircraft. Where the differential interior pressure is achieved by pressurizing the interior space, air or another suitable gas is injected under pressure into the housing. Where the differential interior pressure is obtained by evacuating the housing's interior space, or where the process of pressurizing the interior space includes a prior evacuation step, the gases drawn from within the housing are preferably analyzed to detect the presence of contraband within the received cargo. Sensors on the housing confirm that an achieved interior pressure is substantially maintained over time.

A set of historical profiles of the capacity (weight and volume) reserved by each category is stored for different previous instances of the flight. Corresponding potential profiles are estimated independently for the weight and the volume. The estimation is carried out taking into consideration the corresponding capacity currently reserved by the category for a future instance of the flight; moreover, this result is emphasised according to a corresponding unconstrained demand for the category. A series of historical scenarios of the demand at the departure of each previous instance of the flight are then obtained from the potential profiles. A stochastic model is applied to the historical scenarios according to the corresponding probabilities for calculating the optimised weight and volume authorisations for each category.
