Reducing a power of a signal electromagnetically coupled from a PLC medium to a digital subscriber line (DSL) medium. The method involves transmitting a data signal over the PLC medium at a first average power level from one of a plurality of PLC transmitters coupled to the PLC medium, then measuring first noise associated with a first signal received at a DSL receiver coupled to the DSL communication medium caused at least in part by the data signal transmitted over the PLC medium at a second average power level from the one PLC transmitter, the second average power level different than the first average power level, followed by measuring second noise associated with a second signal received at the DSL receiver coupled to the DSL communication medium caused at least in part by the data signal transmission over the PLC medium at the second average power level. A transmit power spectral density (PSD) for the data signal transmitted by the one PLC transmitter over the PLC medium is then changed, based on a difference between the first noise and the second noise, such that the changed transmit PSD for the data signal transmitted by the one PLC transmitter over the PLC medium reduces the power of the signal electromagnetically coupled from the PLC medium to the DSL medium caused by the data signal transmission from the one PLC transmitter over the PLC medium.

One embodiment includes determining the quality of a communication link associated with each of a plurality of communication nodes, selecting one of the plurality of communication nodes based, at least in part, on the quality of the communication links associated with the communication nodes; and establishing communications with an external network through the selected one communication node. The interface module provides a data unit connection. The interface module is mechanically attached to the base module and electrically connected thereto. In such a case, the outlet will provide the relevant connectivity either as part of the base module or as part of the interface module. In one embodiment, a method of using a device that receives power from the low voltage power of the power distribution system and experiences a power loss during a local power outage may perform the processes of monitoring a voltage of the low voltage power line, detecting a voltage reduction below a threshold voltage for a predetermined time period, storing information of the voltage reduction in a non-volatile memory prior to the power outage, and transmitting a notification to a remote computer system prior to the outage. The monitoring may comprise making a plurality of measurements of the voltage during a time interval and averaging the plurality of voltage measurements. In addition, the method may include transmitting an alert message upon power up after the outage to indicate a power restoration local to the device.

Data communication between two devices (11, 12) over the public powerline network (13) uses a multi carrier technology wherein a communication channel is divided into a plurality of subchannels by frequency division multiplexing. A partial power as part of the total transmission power and a partial rate as a fraction of the total data rate are assigned to each subchannel as follows:Initially, the same partial power is assigned to each subchannel and the S / N ratio of each subchannel is obtained. Starting with the subchannel of the lowest S / N ratio and proceeding to that of the highest S / N ratio, the following steps are performed for each subchannel:Firstly, the partial rate is assigned in accordance with the respective S / N ratio such as to result in a predetermined transmission error rate. The assigned partial rate is then quantised to an integral value. If the quantising corresponds to a rounding down, the initially assigned partial power is reduced such that the transmission error rate remains the same as before quantisation. Further, the partial power of other subchannels with higher S / N ratio is increased such that the sum of all partial powers remains constant. Eventually, the increased S / N ratio resulting from increasing the partial power for these subchannels is calculated so that, when the present steps are conducted for them, an optimum partial rate can be assigned to them.This method maximises the total data rate of the entire communication channel while the error rate of each subchannel and the sum of all partial powers remain constant.
