Methods and systems are provided for performing a biometric measurement on an individual. A purported skin site of the individual is illuminated under a plurality of distinct optical conditions during a single illumination session. Light scattered beneath a surface of the purported skin site is received separately for each of the plurality of distinct optical conditions. A multispectral image of the purported skin site is derived from the received light. A biometric function is performed with the derived multispectral image.

Methods and systems are provided for performing a biometric measurement on an individual. A purported skin site of the individual disposed relative to a platen is illuminated under distinct optical conditions during a single illumination session. At least one of the optical conditions includes illuminating the purported skin site with light at an angle greater than a critical angle defined by an interface of the platen with an external environment. At least another of the distinct optical conditions includes illuminating the purported skin site with light at an angle less than the critical angle. Methods and systems are provided for performing a biometric function. A purported skin site of an individual is illuminated under distinct optical conditions during a single illumination session for a fixed position of the purported skin site. Light from the purported skin site is received for each of the optical conditions. Images of the purported skin site are generated from the received light. The images are analyzed to identify a biometric feature as a characteristic in a portion of at least one of the images. The biometric function is implemented in accordance with an identification of the biometric feature.

An image reading apparatus includes first and second light sources configured to emit first and second lights into a detection target, respectively, a 2-dimensional image sensor and a processing unit. Fingerprint liveness may be determined by evaluating pixels of a fingerprint image to identify pores along a ridge segment of the fingerprint image. A circular derivative operator can be used to identify the pores. Liveness of the fingerprint can be determined based upon features of the identified pores.

Embodiments of the present invention concern a system and method for capturing a user's biometric features and generating an identifier characterizing the user's biometric features using a mobile device such as a smartphone. Methods and apparatus are described for performing a biometric function on a purported skin site. The site is illuminated under distinct optical conditions and light reflected from the site is received. A feature value for several features is derived from the received light, permitting a comparison to be performed with reference feature values. Whether the purported skin site is a true skin site is determined from the comparison.
