Passenger seat with seat back breakover assembly and method

A passenger seat is with a seat back breakover assembly for preventing movement of the seat back unit forwardly past an upright position during normal use and for permitting forward movement of the seat back past an upright position in response to a predetermined abnormal load applied in a forward direction. The breakover assembly includes a controlled deformation member having a bend in one end thereof and positioned intermediate one a section assembly module of the seat and the seat back unit. The bend of the deformation member captures therein an attachment member fixed to and movable forwardly and rearwardly in unison with the seat back unit. An end of the deformation member remote from the bend is restrained for restricted and controlled movement relative to the section assembly module. The deformation member has a resistance to deformation in response to a normal forwardly-applied force sufficient to prevent forward movement of the seat back unit beyond the upright position. The deformation member is deformable in response to an abnormal forwardly-applied force along its length whereby the bend in the deformation member is translated rearwardly along the length of the deformation member to thereby dissipate the abnormal force without damage to the seat back unit.

Passenger seating arrangements

Passenger seating arrangements are detailed. At least some arrangements permit each passenger to access an aisle of a vessel without contacting an adjacent passenger. Movable footwells may be utilized to floor-level access when retracted and function as steps when extended as a seat is converted to a bed. This structure authorizes decrease in seat pitch without decrease of bed length, permitting additional seating to be included in a cabin of a vessel without diminishment of passenger comfort.

Seat assembly for a vehicle

A seat assembly for a bus includes a seat bottom and a seat back pivotally coupled to the seat bottom. An energy absorbing link extends from the seat bottom to the seat back for controlling pivoting of the seat back relative to the seat bottom. The energy absorbing link has a first portion connected to the seat bottom, a second portion connected to the seat back, and a deformable portion disposed therebetween. The deformable portion is deformed as the seat back pivots relative to the seat bottom to absorb energy. First and second members are fixed relative to the energy absorbing link. The first and second members are spaced from each other when the seat back is in an upright position and abut each other when the seat back rotates to a rearward position to limit the deformation of the deformable portion and prevent pivoting beyond the rearward position.

Seat occupancy verification system for motor vehicles

A system and methodology utilizing seat sensors and an electronic card system that monitors the location of children on a bus as well as preventing children from being left behind, is herein disclosed. As the child enters the bus, the child would insert a personalized identification card, thereby recording the child's seat location and presence. Upon exiting, the child again inserts the identification card and following a prescribed time interval, a warning light and alarm would be activated if the seat remains occupied, thus alerting the bus driver to check the seat location. Every bus seat would have an integral weight sensor electrically connected to a main control panel. The system provides the bus driver, or assigned chaperone, a pushbutton selection array corresponding to each seat assignment.

School bus seat with energy absorber

A bus seat comprising an aisle support having a first hexagonally shaped aperture or cavity and a window side support having a second hexagonally shaped aperture or cavity. A seat is hinged to the aisle support and the window support. A seat back is employed which has hexagonally shaped apertures or cavities which each interengage hexagonal shaped torsion members which in turn interengage the cavities in the aisle and window supports. The first and second hexagonally shaped torsion members in combination with the apertures inhibit rotation of the seat back with respect to the aisle and the window side supports and absorb energy when the seat back is rotated relative to the aisle and window supports. The hexagonally shaped cavities are manufactured without significant knit lines formed as the flowability of fiber reinforced polymeric material is enhanced.
