Video telephony dialing

In a video telephony system, a coaxial cable network, which is preferably a part of an existing cable television system, provides a local link for the transmission of the video telephone signals between each originating and destination location and a respective "head end" located on the cable company premises. Each of the head ends is connected to a "point of presence" of a telephone interexchange carrier so that a connection between pairs of head ends, and thus between a pair of video telephone locations, can be made via a switched digital network maintained by the carrier. Certain of originating and destination locations comprise a standard television set, serving as the audio / video display, and a consumer-type camera or camcorder, serving as the audio / video source. Others of the originating and destination locations comprise ISDN video telephones which are connected to the various points of presence of the interexchange carrier via local exchange carrier telephone networks. The video telephone numbers for cable subscriber locations are administered to be the same as the standard ten- (i.e., area code plus seven-) digit telephone numbers used for regular telephone calls directed to those locations.

Cellular phone having a function of receiving a television broadcasting wave

In a cellular phone which receives a television signal by means of a TV receiving section (200), when the cellular phone is brought to an open state after detecting an incoming call while receiving a television signal with the cellular phone kept in the closed state, the television receiving operation ceases automatically for communication by telephone, and thereby the user is not required to execute a troublesome operation to quit receiving the television signal. The control section (22) in the cellular phone does not cease receiving the television signal while the user is talking on the phone and outputs telephone talking voice in place of the television sound. Therefore, the user can enjoy watching the television image while talking on the phone. Further, since the cellular phone displays on a display section (13, 16) the television image and caller's information simultaneously, the user can confirm the caller's information.

Method for Determining a Route Distance Value

A method determines a route in distance value for use in routing protocols. An optimum route is determined for time-critical transmissions such as videotelephony or VoIP. For this purpose, the route distance value is calculated as the product of the link metrics for the links of a route, said link metrics being the product of data packet arrival rates. This value is the optimum value for the route which requires the lowest number of repeated packet transmissions (retransmissions). Optionally, an additional factor can be inserted in the link metrics, which factor ensures that the length of a route is also taken into consideration.
