The inner and outer sealing members are adapted to seal around the facial contours of a user providing a sealed fluid communication to the user's respiratory tract. The inner and outer sealing members are at least continuously in contact with each other around the portions where the sealing interface contacts the user's facial contours. The inner sealing member may be provided with cut outs to provide additional flexibility to particular areas, such as the nasal bridge, upper lip or cheek regions and may be provided with a contoured edge to better fit the facial contours of a user.

A system (10) for attaching a cover (12) to a container (11) and for closing an opening (21) in the cover (12) with a plug (13) utilizes a container (11) having an upper lip (16). The cover (12) is made of an elastomeric material and has handles (30) each having a notch (31) therein to receive the lip (16) of the container (11). The headgear comprises a continuous and substantially curved elongate member extending in use below a user's nose and at least two headgear straps capable of attachment to the ends of the elongate member. A mask attachment on the elongate member is disposed to sit below or on one of said user's nose, mouth, upper lip and an inlet to the mask. The attachment is capable of receiving the mask.

An embodiment of the present invention is a nasal cannula for delivering continuous positive airway pressure (“CPAP”) to a patient's nares during operative procedures or in critical care areas. A malleable metal or plastic is encased in the bridge of the cannula to allow it to be shaped to the patient's face. As a result of contouring the cannula to the face, air leaks are minimized allowing a seal to be provided when an op site is applied to cover the upper lip, nasal cannula and nose. The cannula's nasal inserts can end in nontapered or slightly tapered non-sealing beads, which may be slightly angled out to accommodate various facial anatomies. When approximately several liters per minute of oxygen are flowed through the cannula, CPAP is obtained.

An annular protective rim attachment designed to grip the outer peripheral edge of compact discs (CD's) and digital video discs (DVD's), consisting of a flexible, flat top rim (10), the inner periphery of which is molded to form an upper lip (12), lower lip (14), and between these lips, a gripping mouth (16) to securely hold the CD or DVD (28) inside the aperture of said ring. The present invention provides a nasal pad for use in a mask assembly for delivering pressurized gas to a patient's nose for therapy under continuous positive air pressure. The nose pad includes self-supporting side walls defining a nose receiving cavity; the side walls extending from a first end to a second end. The side wall is continuously formed by a thin septum, wherein the septum extends inwardly from the second end of the side wall into the nose receiving cavity so as to seal with the patient's nose, upper lip and cheek join. The sidewall has a continuously varying thickness. The first end of the side wall is adapted to engage a mask frame. The present invention also provides a mask assembly for delivering pressurized air to a patient, the assembly including nasal pads for sealing over the nose, cheek and lip areas, the nasal pads being as described; for receiving the nasal pads a frame; and a helmet; the helmet includes rigid arms for positioning behind the patient's ears.

The present invention relates to a surface covering (100) comprising panels (200) and at least one extraneous locking element (300). The panels (200) are provided with respective longitudinal and transverse coupling means (400, 500) which are adapted to connect similar panels (200) at corresponding adjacent edges (211, 211′, 213, 213′). The transverse coupling means (500) are adapted to form a channel (501) in coupled condition which is adapted to receive the extraneous locking element (300). An endoscopic bite block, with teeth position defining regions which guide the subject's teeth to grip the bite block in their natural position, with the teeth of the upper jaw positioned further out than the lower jaw teeth. These teeth position defining regions are also preferably curved to match the curved shape of the jaw. The upper and lower parts of the front plate of the bite block may also be positioned at different distances out, so that upper and lower lip regions both contact the front plate snuggly. The bite block may be used with separate oral / nasal cannulae, or may incorporate breath sampling or gas supply cannulae. A flexible flapped curtain at the outer end of the bite block may be provided to largely enclose the inner volume of the bite block to enable more accurate capnographic sampling under conditions of wide-open mouth breathing.

The oral retractor is provided for retracting at least a portion of a patient's mouth. The oral retractor is formed from single, continuous closed-loop strand of stainless steel wire. The oral retractor includes a superior lip-engaging portion for retracting the patient's upper lip away from the upper teeth and gums, and an inferior lip-engaging portion for retracting the patient's lower lip away from the patient's lower teeth and gums. Bilateral arcuate cheek-engaging portions extend posteriorly from the lip-engaging portions for retracting the patient's cheeks away from the teeth and gums. The lip-engaging portions are formed from linear portions defining tented arches that extend anteriorly, and the superior lip-engaging portion may be canted upward, while the inferior lip-engaging portion may be canted downward. The cheek-engaging portions may be substantially parabolic. The retractor may be substantially symmetrical about planes bisecting the retractor vertically and horizontally.

A cheek and lip retractor for dentistry comprises respective cheek portions and lip portions for the upper and lower lips. In one embodiment, the lip portions each comprise a lip shield and mucosa pads that are separate and spaced apart from the lip shield. The lip shield includes a first side edge that is disposed within a patient's mouth, and a second side edge that is disposed outside the patient's mouth, when the retractor is used to separate the lips of the patient. The cheek portions and lip portions are connected to each other by flexible connecting elements, and the connecting elements are disposed between the lip shields and the mucosa pads. In another embodiment, the cheek portions of the retractor include first side edges disposed within a patient's mouth, and second side edges disposed outside the patient's mouth during use to separate the lips of the patient.
