246 results about "Resilient Packet Ring" patented technology

Resilient Packet Ring (RPR), also known as IEEE 802.17, is a protocol standard designed for the optimized transport of data traffic over optical fiber ring networks. The standard began development in November 2000 and has undergone several amendments since its initial standard was completed in June 2004. The amended standards are 802.17a through 802.17d, the last of which was adopted in May 2011. It is designed to provide the resilience found in SONET/SDH networks (50 ms protection) but, instead of setting up circuit oriented connections, provides a packet based transmission, in order to increase the efficiency of Ethernet and IP services.

System and method for optimizing network capacity in a cellular wireless network

A system and method is disclosed for increasing the efficiency of a cellular communication network, reduce ongoing operating costs and increase revenue. According to one aspect, a method is disclosed for increasing the efficiency of a cellular communication network whereby network capacity in the radio access network (RAN) and baseband processing for wireless connections are dynamically adjusted to automatically provision sufficient bandwidth and baseband processing capacity in response to changes in the network. The method is further extended by implementing policy management which allows wireless carriers to develop and implement network based policies to automatically increase or decrease the amount of processing resources and network bandwidth required from any cell site, hub or mobile switching office. According to another aspect, network efficiency is enhanced by utilizing a novel cellular network infrastructure. RF signals from cell site antennas of various technology types are demodulated, digital bit information is extracted from the RF signals, processed, and groomed into Gigabit Ethernet/Resilient Packet Ring (GigE/RPR) or Ethernet over copper traffic flows using specific Quality of Service (QoS) priorities. The GigE/RPR traffic flows are routed to hub sites or mobile switching offices, at which point the packetized information is extracted and converted to RF signals that are equivalent to the signals that were received at the antenna. The RF signals are sent over coaxial cable to a network hub including a pool of Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) (or Node Bs). The hub is coupled to one or more mobile switching offices via a second fiber optic ring.

Method for dynamic lossless adjustment of bandwidth of an embedded resilient packet ring network

Disclosed is a method for dynamically and losslessly adjusting bandwidth of an embedded Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) ring network, in which dynamic and lossless bandwidth adjustment for an RPR ring network embedded in a Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) / Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) can be realized through adding a Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS) system in the SDH / SONET processing layer. When it is required to increase ring network bandwidth, the bandwidth of the link section between sites on the SDH / SONET processing layer is first increased. Then the LCAS system in the SDH / SONET processing layer is started, and the actual bandwidth of the link on the SDH / SONET processing layer is increased losslessly with the LCAS system. Finally the bandwidth of the ring network on the RPR processing layer is increased. When it is required to decrease ring network bandwidth, the bandwidth of the ring network on the RPR processing layer is first decreased. Then the LCAS system in the SDH / SONET processing layer is started, and the actual bandwidth of the link on the SDH / SONET processing layer is decreased losslessly with the LCAS system. Finally the bandwidth of the link section between sites on the SDH / SONET processing layer is decreased. With the disclosed method, dynamic and lossless bandwidth adjustment for an embedded RPR ring network in SDH / SONET can be realized.

Fast replacing method of elastic group loop network

After malfunction happens on optic fiber, two nodes of two ends of defective optic fiber enter into bypass mode. Meanwhile, the said nodes send broadcast packets to other nodes through outer ring and inner ring to inform other nodes where failure occurs. With broadcast packet containing defective information being received, other nodes on ring net reselect direction for sending data stream based on failure location on ring net. The invention combines advantages of bypass rearrangement mode and guiding rearrangement mode so as to assure fast automatic capacity for rearrangement, save network bandwidth and low rate of losing packet.

Method and apparatus for carrying unknown traffic over a resilient packet ring (RPR) without flooding

A method and corresponding apparatus allows unknown packet traffic, such as Ethernet traffic, to be carried on a Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) network without flooding the traffic on the RPR network. Modules in a station of the ring network compare a destination address in a packet traffic signal with known addresses and associate an identifier of a tunnel in the ring network with the packet traffic signal based on the comparison. The modules then associate with the packet traffic signal an identifier of a destination station in the ring network that corresponds to the identifier of the tunnel and forward the packet traffic signal to the destination station via the tunnel. By transmitting the packet traffic via tunnels instead of flooding the RPR network, spatial reuse may be implemented allowing the network to support a higher volume of traffic.

Allocating bandwidth using resilient packet ring (RPR) fairness mechanism

In allocating bandwidth using a Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) fairness mechanism in a node connected to an RPR network, when congestion occurs, an amount of traffic that the node has transmitted to a ring during one aging interval is stored together with its own identifier in a fairness message as a fairness transmission rate to be advertised to its own upstream nodes. The amount of traffic transmitted from the upstream node during the aging interval is measured and stored. When the congestion has been solved, an available bandwidth is calculated with reference to the fairness transmission rate and the amount of traffic transmitted from the upstream nodes, and the fairness transmission rate is calculated to fairly allocate the available bandwidth to the upstream nodes so that the fairness transmission rate is transmitted to the upstream nodes.
