Systems and methods for ambulatory monitoring of physiological signs

The present invention relates to the field of ambulatory and non-invasive monitoring of a plurality of physiological parameters of a monitored individual. The invention includes a physiological monitoring apparatus with an improved monitoring apparel worn by a monitored individual, the apparel having attached sensors for monitoring parameters reflecting pulmonary function, or parameters reflecting cardiac function, or parameters reflecting the function of other organ systems, and the apparel being designed and tailored to be comfortable during the individual's normal daily activities. The apparel is preferably also suitable for athletic activities. The sensors preferably include one or more ECG leads and one of more inductive plethysmographic sensor with conductive loops positioned closely to the individual to preferably monitor at least basic cardiac parameters, basic pulmonary parameters, or both. The monitoring apparatus also includes a unit for receiving data from the sensors, and for storing the data in a computer-readable medium. The invention also includes systems comprising a central data repository for receiving, storing, and processing data generated by a plurality of physiological monitored apparatus, and for making stored data available to the individual and to health care providers.

The present invention comprises a lens with variable refraction power as well as an optical system for the use as, preferably accommodating, visual aid. The lens is designed as an intraocular lens or as a contact lens. The general idea of the invention is to determine the accommodation requirement from the position of the eyes relative to one another. This is possible, since the accommodation requirement and the eyes' motor activity are closely related. According to a first embodiment, the present invention claims a lens with variable refraction power, which possesses the following components: means for adaptation of the refraction power, especially by a change of the lens' curvature as a reaction to a control signal; at least one position locator; means for detection of the relative position of the position locator to at least another position locator arranged on another lens; means for generation of the control signal for adaptation of the refraction power of the lens to the detected relative position and at least one device for power supply for at least parts of the components of the lens.

Systems and methods of power output measurement

The present invention pertains to systems and methods of individual power output measurement. One embodiment relates to a pressure sensing device configured to be mounted on the bottom surface of a shoe. The device includes a sensor, a wireless communication system, a housing, and a mounting system. A second embodiment relates to a direct power measurement system including a pressure sensing device, a computer module, and a display module. In a bicycling application of the system, the device is mounted on the bottom surface of a shoe so as to measure applied pressure between at least one of the rider's shoe and corresponding bicycle pedal. The computing module mathematically converts the measured pressure as a function of time to a value of power exerted by the rider. In addition, the computing module may utilize the measured pressure as a function of time to compute the rider's cadence (pedal revolutions per unit of time). Various well-known communication systems such as RF may be integrated within the device and computing module to facilitate data transmission. Similar systems may be used to calculate an individual's power output during other activities including but not limited to running, rowing, walking, etc. A third embodiment relates to a method for calculating individual power output during an athletic activity. The method includes sensing pressure at a particular location, calculating or computing power, and displaying power.

Detection of smooth muscle motor activity

A system and method for determining smooth muscle motor activity in body organs. The system comprises electrodes for recording an analog signal in the subject's body, an analog to digital converter that converts the analog signal to a digital signal and a processor. Processing the digital signal includes obtaining power spectra of the digital signal, and identifying one or more frequency peaks in the power spectra. A peak in the power spectrum is identified within a frequency range in which an organ generates slow waves. The energy of the identified frequency peak is measured and an energy above a characteristic threshold is indicative of smooth muscle motor muscle motor activity in the respective organ.

Aqueous metal bicarbonate solution and method of use

An aqueous neutral to mildly alkaline metal bicarbonate solution is disclosed. The solution comprises metal bicarbonate dissolved in the solution, the metal bicarbonate comprising bicarbonate anions and metal cations. In addition there is a pH adjusting agent in the solution in an amount whereby the solution is at a neutral to mildly alkaline pH. Also disclosed is a process of preparing an aqueous neutral to mildly alkaline metal bicarbonate solution comprising bicarbonate anions and metal cations. The process comprises reacting a compound selected from the group consisting of metal carbonate, metal carbonate hydroxide, metal oxide, metal hydroxide and any mixture thereof with an effective concentration of a pH adjusting agent to produce the aqueous neutral to mildly alkaline metal bicarbonate solution, wherein the pH adjusting agent is present in an amount whereby the solution is at a neutral to mildly alkaline pH. Further disclosed are a method of preventing and / or treating certain inflammatory diseases and / or degenerative diseases in a mammal, a method of preventing and / or treating certain viral diseases in a mammal, a method of decreasing and / or treating senescence and / or of increasing longevity in a mammal, a method of scavenging protons in a mammal, a method of decreasing proton concentrations in a mammal by altering carbonic anhydrase enzyme reactions in said mammal, a method of decreasing inflammation and / or inflammatory conditions in a mammal and a method of increasing motor activity and / or decreasing fatigue in a mammal.
