Image processing apparatus and method

An image processing apparatus and method generate a three dimensional representation of a scene which includes a plurality of objects disposed on a plane. The three dimensional representation is generated from one or more video images of the scene, which include the objects on the plane produced from a view of the scene by a video camera. The method comprises processing the captured video images so as to extract one or more image features from each object, comparing the one or more image features with sample image features from a predetermined set of possible example objects which the video images may contain, and identifying the objects from the comparison of the image features with the stored image features of the possible example objects. The method also includes generating object path data, which includes object identification data for each object which identifies the respective object; and provides a position of the object on the plane in the video images with respect to time. The method further includes calculating a projection matrix for projecting the position of each of the objects according to the object path data from the plane into a three dimensional model of the plane. As such a three dimensional representation of the scene which includes a synthesised representation of each of the plurality of objects on the plane can be produced, by projecting the position of the objects according to the object path data into the plane of the three dimensional model of the scene using the projection matrix and a predetermined assumption of the height of each of the objects. Accordingly, a three dimensional representation of a live video image of, for example, a football match can be generated, or tracking information included on the live video images. As such, a change in a relative view of the generated three dimensional representation can be made, so that a view can be provided in the three dimensional representation of the scene from a view point at which no camera is actually present to capture video images of the live scene.

Systems and methods for the real-time and realistic simulation of natural atmospheric lighting phenomenon

Systems and methods are provided for visually realistic simulation and real-time rendering of natural atmospheric lighting and related phenomena in an outdoor scene represented by an image provided by a simulation environment. The systems and methods of the present invention provide techniques to approximate the visual effects of natural atmospheric lighting and related phenomena that are visually realistic and that can be computed in real-time to render frames of a scene at real-time frame rates per second. The techniques consider the light scattering effects due to sunlight and ambient light in relation to objects, atmospheric particles and other scene elements represented by the image.

Method and apparatus for providing threat image projection (TIP) in a luggage screening system, and luggage screening system implementing same

A method and apparatus for testing luggage screening equipment operators is provides. A sequence of images of contents of luggage items derived from a device that scans the luggage items with penetrating radiation are received. The image generation device is characterized by introducing a certain distortion into these images of contents of luggage items. A display device is caused to display images derived from this sequence of images. Occasionally, the display device is caused to show a simulated threat in a luggage item by displaying a combined image derived based at least in part on an image in the sequence of images and a distorted threat image. The distorted threat image was derived by applying a distortion insertion process to a reference threat image wherein the distortion insertion process tends to approximate the certain distortion introduced in the images of contents of luggage items by the device that scans the luggage items with penetrating radiation.

Method for modelling the production of hydrocarbons by a subsurface deposit which are subject to depletion

A method for forming a model simulating production, by an underground reservoir subject to depletion, of hydrocarbons comprising notably relatively high-viscosity oils. From laboratory measurements of the respective volumes of oil and gas produced by rock samples from the reservoir subject to depletion, and the relative permeabilities (Kr) of rock samples to hydrocarbons, a model of the formation and flow of the gas fraction is used to determine a volume transfer coefficient (hv) by means of an empirical function representing the distribution of nuclei that can be activated at a pressure P (function N(P)) which is calibrated with reference to the previous measurements. Considering that the nuclei distribution N(P) in the reservoir rocks is the same as the distribution measured in the laboratory, the numerical transfer coefficient corresponding thereto in the reservoir at selected depletion rates is determined using the gas fraction formation and flow model, which allows predicting the relative permeabilities in the reservoir and the production thereof which is useful for reservoir engineering. Applications notably reservoir engineering.

Method and system for generating colored comfort noise in the absence of silence insertion description packets

A method and system for utilizing information content in speech and a transition hangover between speech and noise to generate comfort noise on the decoder side. This adaptation to noise may be accomplished using various algorithms of estimating the spectrum of color noise. According to an embodiment of the present invention, an adaptation algorithm may be implemented that adapts, with time, rather than a block based algorithm to prevent the repeated generation of artifacts present in the block that are being adapting to. The method and system of the present invention generates comfort noise in the absence of silent insertion descriptions containing spectrum information thereby saving bandwidth and generating colored comfort noise that reflects the spectrum of the actual noise.

Method for creating a 3-dimensional model from a 2-dimensional source image

A method is disclosed which allows the user of a software program to create a 3-dimensional model from a 2-dimensional source image. The method includes: providing a 3-dimensional environment to contain the model, placing the 2-dimensional source image within the environment as a layer, providing tools for the user to extract portions of the image onto additional layers, providing tools for the user to change the depth of vertices within the layers.
