A machine, such as a coordinate measuring machine, having an element and a structure movable with respect to each other along rails, wherein the rails have a different coefficient of thermal expansion than the structure to which they are attached. In one embodiment, a bar is disposed on the structure opposite the rails. This bar has a coefficient of thermal expansion, a stiffness, a spacing from the neutral axis of the structure, and a cross-sectional dimension such that the bar balances any thermal stresses in the structure caused by differential expansion or contraction of the structure and the rails with temperature changes to minimize any bending of the structure. In one embodiment, two rails are disposed on a beam, and a carriage travels on the two rails. For each rail, there is an associated bar disposed on an opposite surface of the beam. In another aspect, a pin extends into an elongated slot on a slide associated with the structure to allow the structure to expand and contact. In yet another aspect, a movable element, such as a carriage, is coupled to an associated slide riding along the rails by a leaf spring to accommodate expansion and contraction of the element.

The tensioned elongated element is arranged so as to be displaced in its longitudinal direction into or out of the subsea wellhead element via an entry at a top end of the latter. The structural behaviour of the wellhead element is measured. The bending moment and/or declination of the tensioned elongated element is estimated in a bottom region adjacent to and/or at the entry upon the basis of the measurement of the structural behaviour of the wellhead element.

An O-ring seal system for pipe flanges having a backing ring, an O-ring seal positioned within the backing ring, and a vacuum ring positioned within the O-ring seal. The backing ring and the vacuum ring form a rigid base against which mating flanges on pipes can be bolted together, thereby preventing bending of the mating flanges and permitting flange bolts to be torqued to their full tensile load limit without damage to the mating flanges. The O-ring seal system is constructed so that the O-ring seal is retained between the mating flanges without the need to position the O-ring seal in a groove in one of the mating flanges. Bending of the flanges is minimized since the flanges are clamped against the backing ring, minimizing stresses due to bending, thereby extending the service life of the flanges.

A media control valve includes a body, a plunger assembly of multiple components housed in the body with a plunger control valve cap assembly secured to the body for housing a control knob. The body and the plunger assembly include resilient seals between adjacent multiple components of the body and the plunger assembly, respectively, to permit relative movement therebetween during assembly and use. The media control valve includes a diaphragm which acts as a membrane that physically isolates and seals the chambers above and below. The spool design of the valve has all of the seals and bushings held within the spool. Once the spool is removed, the replacement seals and bushings can be replaced and inspected with relative ease due to the accessibility at both ends of the spool. Since each plunger seal is held within its own rigid cavity, held on three sides and not stacked on top of another seal or loose component, proper alignment is better assured during and after installation. The body components parts are also assembled using resilient seals to facilitate assembly and repair, while reducing any tendency of the valve to seize during use.
