A compact and efficient optical illumination system featuring planar multi-layered LED light source arrays concentrating their polarized or un-polarized output within a limited angular range. The optical system manipulates light emitted by a planar light emitters such as electrically-interconnected LED chips. Each light emitting region in the array is surrounded by reflecting sidewalls whose output is processed by elevated prismatic films, polarization converting films, or both. The optical interaction between light emitters, reflecting sidewalls, and the elevated prismatic films create overlapping virtual images between emitting regions that contribute to the greater optical uniformity. Practical illumination applications of such uniform light source arrays include compact LCD or DMD video image projectors, as well as general lighting, automotive lighting, and LCD backlighting.

An illumination system according to the principles of the invention may include a first LED and a carrier material. The carrier material may be comprised of plastic, synthetic material, polymer, latex, rubber or other material. The carrier material may also contain a phosphor, fluorescent material, organic fluorescent material, inorganic fluorescent material, impregnated phosphor, phosphor particles, phosphor material, YAG:Ce phosphor, or other material for converting electromagnetic radiation into illumination or visible light.

A high-powered lighting assembly includes an easily sealed continuous thermal barrier and a solid-state actively controlled closed-loop refrigeration system to maximize operational efficiencies and increase unit life. The thermal barrier prevents thermal back-flow from a heat sink plate or a housing to a lighting array while insulating a control module and a thermal sensor with improved sealing geometry. The refrigeration system is optimally positioned to controllably pump heat from the lighting array to the heat sink plate.

A diode light source for theatrical and architectural lighting has a number of separate, flat, rigid panels for mounting light-emitting diodes. These emit diode light beams to a common focal area. A group of the diodes is mounted on each panel, and each panel has an inner and outer panel. A screw arrangement selectively positions the panels, with each oriented at a selected angle relative to an axis, and with each diodes group emitting diode light beams transverse to each separate panel. Each inner panel is flexibly secured to the screw arrangement. The panels hold the diodes and act as electrical circuit boards for transmitting direct electrical current to the diodes on the panels. The screw includes an elongated, externally threaded cylinder with opposed inner and outer ends that is rotatably aligned with the axis and mounted on a corresponding internally cylindrical threaded nut.

A lighting system for stage, theatrical and architectural lighting, comprising a frame for supporting a plurality of light emitting diodes. The diodes are mounted to the frame so that each diode is both secured to the frame and also simultaneously positioned wherein each discrete diode light beam is directed to a prescribed remote focal point (target zone) and thereupon directed to a predetermined illumination area. Electrical power for transmitting and controlling electrical voltage to light emitting diodes by electrical circuitry integral with the frame. The frame can be configured as any hollow volume such a cone, a semi-ellipse, and a semi-sphere or can be configured as planar. Flexible blanks having apertures and pads for electrical connections can be used to construct rigid frames. An imaging gate a collimating lens and a focusing lens can be interposed between the frame and the illumination area. The frame can also be a sandwich frame having positive and negative electrically conductive layers interposed between layers of biasable insulating foam.

Various embodiments described herein include lighting systems that produce an optical beam. Moreover, in various embodiments, the beam may be altered to provide, for example, a narrow beam or a wide beam. One such lighting system includes a light source, a diffusing optical element, and a projection lens. The diffusing optical element is disposed between the light source and the projection lens and can be translated to provide zoom capability.

A LED luminaire track lighting system includes an elongate track, having a number of longitudinal guideways, for attachment to a support surface, as well as a number of current conductors arranged within at least some of the guideways. The first of these conductors are power conductors and the second conductors are data conductors, the conductors being electrically isolated from each other. The lighting system further contains a first adapter for connection to a source of electrical power for the power conductors, and a second adapter for connection to a source of control data for application of data to the data conductors. There is at least one LED color-changing luminaire present in the system, and this luminaire contains a number of LEDs, each of which, when energized, generates a single color out of a discrete plurality of colors. A data converter converts data along the data lines to control the currents in the individual groups of color LEDs so that they create a desired composite color. Further, at least electrically, the LED color-changing luminaire is at least electrically connected to the power conductors and data conductors in the track.

The present invention provides a luminaire comprising an housing having thermally separate compartments for an electronics portion and a lighting portion. These thermally separate compartments can provide a means for providing thermal isolation between the respective components, namely the electronics portion and the lighting portion. In this manner thermal interaction between these portions can be reduced, thereby improving performance of the luminaire. The lighting portion comprises a plurality of light-emitting elements and further includes optics for the manipulation of illumination created by the light-emitting elements. A power supply for supply of energy to the light-emitting elements and a controller for controlling application of energy from a power source to the light-emitting elements is provided in the electronics portion and can be thermally separated within the electronics portion. Moreover, an optical device comprising two linear diffuser elements can be used to further improve the light emission characteristics of the light-emitting elements thereby providing a directly viewable luminaire wherein the illumination produced by point light sources appears uniform along the length of the luminaire.

A lighting device is disclosed to include a light source formed of light emitting diodes and/or laser diodes and controlled to emit light and/or to flash by a programmable controller, a lens, which has raised portions for refracting the light of the light emitting diodes and/or laser diodes to produce a lighting effect, and a driving mechanism for rotating the lens relative to the light source.

A light fixture may include LEDs that each emits light into a particular zone on a lens, where each zone has its own focal properties. Each LED may be grouped into one (or more) subset(s) that corresponds to the zone(s) struck by its emitted light. The LEDs may be selectively electrically controllable, so that the amount of light transmitted through each zone may be controllable by the electrical control system of the fixture. Because light transmitted through different zones emerges from the fixture having different widths, the electrical control system can directly control the amount of light emerging at each width. By mixing relatively narrow light with relatively wide light in the proper proportions, the electrical control system of the fixture may produce light having any desired angular profile between “narrow” and “wide”. One may think of the fixture having a controller that features both a dimmer, which can control the optical power or brightness of the fixture 1, and a “width” controller, which can dial in values between “narrow” and “wide” light. By varying the relative contributions of the different beam widths, the angular profile of the total output may be varied, and may advantageously be varied electronically, without any moving parts.

An apeture mechanism that utilizes translucent, transparent or colored blades to modify the output beam of a lighting device is provided. A conventional apeture mechanism having replacement blades formed of a diffusion screen provides a control assembly that, when placed in front of the output beam of a lighting device, allows the user to selectively control the beam between a spot and a flood pattern. Further, the blades may be formed of translucent or transparent colored filter material to alter the color of the output beam. The apeture mechanism may be incorporated into compact lighting devices such as flashlights, architectural lighting devices or other accessories for use in conjunction with these lighting devices.

The relationships of the operating voltages (U, U', U'') of different LED groups (<bold>6, 6'; 6''</highlight>) are controlled and/or regulated in accordance with a color to be reproduced on a target plane.

To provide a lighting device capable of a substantial color adjustment and unlimited control of spectral components, a lighting device of the present invention puts a first transparent plate in which a phosphor layer dispersed with a first phosphor is formed in places and a second transparent plate in which a phosphor layer dispersed with a second phosphor is formed in places in a path of light from a light source, and stacks the first transparent plate and the second transparent plate on top of each other. The second phosphor differs from the first phosphor. How much in terms of area the phosphor layers overlap with each other is made variable, and the color tone of the lighting device can thus be controlled. The lighting device uses a blue light source as its light source, a green phosphor as the first phosphor, and a red phosphor as the second phosphor. An intended chromaticity can be obtained by varying how much in terms of area the green phosphor layer and the red phosphor layer overlap with each other and thereby adjusting the green light absorption amount of the red phosphor.

A rotary projector light can include a lamp case defining a hollow mounting chamber and having an open front end; a power supply located inside the lamp case, the power supply connected to a power cable adapted to connect to an external power source; a motor located inside the lamp case, the motor electrically connected to the power supply and having a spindle; a positioning seat mounted on the spindle; a plurality of light emitting diode (LED) elements located on the positioning seat, the LED elements electrically connected to the power supply; and a beam-splitting lens cover located on the open front end of the lamp case. The beam-splitting lens cover can have an inner surface with multiple convex lenses directed at multiple refraction angles.
