A data communication system for use in downhole applications wherein electrical energy is supplied over a multiple-conductor power cable to an ESP motor assembly. A downhole unit is AC-coupled to the conductors of the power cable through the wye point of the ESP motor assembly. A surface unit is AC-coupled to the conductors of the power cable. Uplink communication of telemetry data occurs over an AC communication scheme supported by the downhole unit and the surface unit. Downlink communication of remote control command data occurs over a different AC communication scheme supported by the surface unit and the downhole unit. These AC communication schemes provide an independent supply of power to the downhole environment. All communication between the surface and downhole environment is accomplished through the power cable without the use of additional communication lines. Data communication is maintained in the event of a ground fault on the power cable.

System and method for data retrieval in AC power tools via an AC line cord

An apparatus and method for obtaining data stored in an electronic module within a power tool over a power line cord of the tool, and without any disassembly of the tool being required. An interface subsystem applies a high frequency, low power AC input signal to the power cord of the tool. A controller within the tool recognizes this signal as an indication that the tool is to be placed in a communications mode. The controller modulates a power switching device used for turning on and off the motor of the tool in such a fashion that current pulses are transmitted over the power line cord back to the interface subsystem. The current pulses correspond to tool usage / performance / identification information stored in the electronic module of the tool. This information is interpreted by a current reader circuit of the interface subsystem as binary information which is then transmitted to an external computing data logging device for analysis and / or recording.

Method and apparatus for transmission of data on multiple propagation modes with far-end cross-talk cancellation

A digital telemetry system having improved data rate and robustness. The telemetry system has a data transmission cable having a first end and a second end, and is capable of transmitting data between the first and second end on at least two propagation modes. A data source connected at the first end has data transmission circuitry to generate data signals on these propagation modes. A receiver connected to the second end of the wireline cable has a first receive circuitry to receive signals on a first of the at least two propagation modes and a second receive circuitry to receive signals on a second of the at least two propagation modes. An adaptive far-end cross-talk cancellation circuitry connected to the first receive circuitry and to the second receive circuitry cancels out far-end cross-talk between the at least two propagation modes.

Signal and power transmission system

In a signal and power transmission system, a primary coil and a secondary coil magnetically coupled to the primary coil and connected to an electrical path are provided. An encoder encodes a target signal to be transmitted to produce a pulse code signal, and a voltage applying unit applies a voltage signal based on the pulse code signal to the primary coil as an input voltage signal. A decoder decodes an output voltage signal induced in the secondary coil using a variation in the output voltage signal into a decoded signal corresponding to the target signal. The output voltage signal is induced in the secondary coil based on the input voltage signal. A rectifier rectifies a current flowing through the electrical path connected to the secondary coil according to the output voltage signal induced in the secondary coil, thus outputting a rectified current as power.

Provided are systems and methods for ground fault immune data measurement system for electric submersible pumps. A data measurement system coupled to the ESP includes a surface unit coupled to a 3-phase power cable for providing power to a 3-phase motor of the ESP and a downhole unit coupled to the motor of the ESP and located downhole in a well. The downhole unit includes sensor and is configured to generate frequency modulated carrier signals for carrying the sensor data to the surface unit. Each of the frequency modulated carrier signals carries identical sensor data and is modulated to a different frequency. The carrier signals are shunted across the motor windings of the ESP motor and onto the 3-phase power cable via a capacitive coupling. Additionally, another carrier signal carrying control data may be transmitted from the surface unit to the downhole unit.

A power line communications technique (PLC) is disclosed which allows communications across any three phase electric system by modulating the impedance through earth between any two points of differing voltage on the electrical system in order to use the power supply as the communications power source thereby using the power supply current as the communications carrier. No additional coupled communications source is required and modulation of an earth link current at the power frequency is especially suitable for remote electrical loads, such as an oil well electric submersible pump, where it is most cost effective to only have the three power conductors and no neutral nor signal wires in the power cable. Signalling Method and Apparatus

An electrical signalling system comprises a modulator arranged to accept information and encode that information in an alternating signal containing repeated rising and falling edges, the encoding being by way of the time between consecutive rising or consecutive falling edges, a transmission path for the signal from modulator to a demodulator, where the demodulator is arranged to detect the signal edge and store a record of the signal around that edge and compare a subsequent part of the signal with that record thereby to detect a like edge and detect the time difference between like edges. Such a system need not detect the precise position of the edge but detects that an edge has occurred within a short time frame, and retains an image of the signal during that period. That image is compared with a subsequent part of the signal, and where the subsequent signal differs only minimally from the record the system deems that a second like edge has occurred. Thus, although the precise position of the edge may or may not be detected by this system, the time delay between respective like edges is detected. The transmission path can be imperfect, for example inductive. The system is capable of sending recognisable signals along a three-phase electrical supply cable. The invention is particularly applicable to the supply of information from downhole sensors in the oil and gas extraction industries. Two signals can be sent simultaneously by also detecting unlike edges and the time difference therebetween. Multiple sources of data can be included consecutively.

In a preferred embodiment, the outlet device is adapted to convert the power line signal into at least an Ethernet signal or a RS232 signal. In preferred embodiments, the Ethernet signal or RS232 signal is substantially free from interference from the high frequency noise.

System and method for borehole communication

To produce a desired telemetry signal, the desired telemetry signal is first determined and then decomposed into two or more component signals. For each component signal, commands are sent to an individual modulator. The individual modulators each produce individual signals according to their received commands. The individual signals from each individual modulator are combined to produce the desired telemetry signal, or the individual signals from each individual modulator are allowed to combine to produce the desired telemetry signal. A telemetry system that produces such desired telemetry signals includes an uplink transmitter / receiver pair, a downlink transmitter / receiver pair, or both pairs, wherein each uplink transmitter and each downlink receiver is disposed in a wellbore. Two or more modulators are provided, as is a telemetry signal generator having a processor capable of decomposing a desired telemetry signal into two or more component signals and issuing commands to control the two or more modulators.

This invention relates to a power line communication (PLC) system wherein the power supply line supplies power and also acts as a communications supply line. A receiver is able to detect small changes in the modulated transmitted information and thereby shut down the circuit.
