Actuators

An actuator has an output ram driven to extend and retract by a rotating lead screw. The lead screw is coupled with a rotating input shaft via a lost-motion drive sleeve connected with the input shaft by cooperating threads so that rotation of the drive shaft causes both axial and rotational movement of the drive sleeve. The ram is locked in its retracted position by several radially-extending locking keys, one end of which engage an extension sleeve fixed with the ram and the other end of which are engaged by a lock sleeve. Rotation of the input shaft causes the drive sleeve to move axially and engage the lock sleeve, thereby pulling it to one side and allowing the locking keys to move radially out and disengage the extension sleeve to allow it to extend.

In operation, the sensor pod can be retracted into a compact, stowing position, or extended out an opening in the aircraft for an unobstructed field of view. The system and apparatus of the present invention is generally comprised of a non-dedicated, temporarily installed, aircraft observer bubble door, chair, sonotube ejection system, mission electronics LRU rack and workstation assembly which are affixed to the Air Deployment System (ADS) rails, cargo tie down ā€œDā€ rings, seat belt restraint ring bolt sockets, and litter bar of a host aircraft, thereby precluding the requirement for dedicated airframe modifications. One embodiment of the present invention also utilizes a multi-axis, articulated, foldable chair temporarily installed in conjunction with a segmented or one piece pressurized observer bubble door plug and door retraction system. The door plug assembly is designed to accommodate the simultaneous use of a sonotube stores launch system, a missile defense system, and an observer bubble window. The door plug also accommodates fitment around the envelope of a special mission strut which extends through the interior to the exterior of the host aircraft beneath the door plug's lower periphery. The door plug is also moveably mounted within a temporary retraction rail system which interfaces mechanically to the permanent door retraction rails and the aircraft floor or ADS rail system. When the host aircraft is not equipped with an ADS rail system, the retract rails, chair stanchion, mission electronics racks, and workstation assemblies are mounted to an adaptive floor plate (AFP) which can be modified to interface with various cargo floor ā€œDā€ rings, or other cargo tie down mechanisms and bolt patterns such that several types of dissimilar aircraft can utilize the subject apparatus either with or without ADS rails installed. Once installed the subject apparatus can be stowed outboard of the fuselage cargo transit envelope to permit use of the ADS rail system in-flight, without affecting normal air drop operations, crew egress, the flight performance envelope, or emergency procedures of the host aircraft.

Frangible pneumatic latch

An inflatable evacuation slide system includes an inflatable evacuation slide stored in a packboard compartment the cover panel of which is retained by a plurality of frangible pneumatic latches. The frangible pneumatic latches each comprise a tension member one end of which is attached to the packboard housing and the other end of which is releasably attached to the cover panel. In normal operation, a pneumatic signal operating on an actuator piston withdraws the piston to allow the latch mechanism to release the cover panel. In the event of a failure of the release mechanism, since the releasable latch secures the cover panel to the frangible tension member rather than to the packboard directly, the force of the inflating evacuation slide breaks the frangible member allowing the cover panel to drop away with only a brief delay in slide deployment.

Plug door operating mechanism

The present invention provides a door operating system for opening and closing a door covering an exit opening of an aircraft. More particularly, the present invention provides a door operating system for opening and closing a plug type door typically located on the lower passenger deck of an aircraft. The door operating system includes a frame that is connected to the door of the aircraft and defines a pivot for the door. Connected to the frame is a torque drum and linkage system. The door operating system also includes a motor and a cable drum attached to the opposite end of the track. A cable is connected to the cable drum, the torque drum, and the frame. When opening the door, the motor turns the cable drum, which thereby pulls the cable. The cable rotates the drive torque drum and causes the door to be rotated about the pivot thereby moving the door upwardly and inwardly away from the exit opening. After the door has moved away from the exit opening, the cable pulls the frame such that the frame slides along the track and is moved lengthwise with respect to the aircraft away from the exit opening. To close the door, the above operations are reversed. As an aid to opening and closing the door, the door operating system also includes an interlock system that prevents the door from being moved lengthwise along the track until the door has been fully rotated upwardly and inwardly by the torque drum.
