Orthopedic fixation device with zero backlash and adjustable compliance, and process for adjusting same

An orthopedic fixator for positioning a first element relative to a second element with precision and with controlled compliance which can be adjusted during the healing process. One embodiment comprises a first frame for attachment to the first element, a second frame attached to the first frame through a plurality of adjustable effective length struts, and a third frame for attachment to the second element, wherein the third frame is compliantly attached to the second frame. A preferred embodiment comprises adjustable length preload elements to apply unidirectional forces between the first and second frames so as preload the adjustable effective length struts and substantially reduce the positional tolerance. An alternative embodiment comprises adjustable spring elements allowing the compliance of the attachment of the third frame to the second frame to be adjusted at various points in the healing process.

Composite internal fixators

A multi-layer, fiber-reinforced composite orthopaedic fixation device having a design selected based on a desired characteristic of the orthopaedic fixation device. The design may be selected according to a model of the device, the model defining design constraints, and the design may comprise a pattern of the fiber angle for each layer. The selection of a design may be analyzed using finite element analysis to determine whether the design will comprise the desired characteristic.

Bio-active construct created between fixation device and suture fixed in bone

InactiveUS20100262184A1Increase healing responseImprove responseSuture equipmentsIn vivoHydrolysis
Methods and constructs including a fixation device and a suture for fixation of soft tissue to bone, or of soft tissue to soft tissue, which amplifies the body's healing response created by the introduction of the suture material and the material properties of the fixation device. Fixation of soft tissue to bone (or of soft tissue to soft tissue) is conducted using a suture (for example, a suture strand, braid, a suture tape, or a combination thereof) and a fixation device (for example, a bone anchor, implant or screw). The suture and fixation device are manufactured from materials that have properties to amplify the body's healing response. Materials such as synthetic bioresorbable polymers (for example, poly-lactic acid) are utilized in the fabrication of orthopedic fixation devices. Once these materials are introduced into the body and are exposed to in vivo conditions, the devices manufactured with these materials undergo hydrolysis and degrade while maintaining specific mechanical properties over time.

Composite metal and bone orthopedic fixation devices

Composite orthopedic devices that facilitate spine stabilization, such as: bone screws, rods, plates, interbodies, and corpectomy cages are disclosed. They are designed to provide both strength and load carrying capabilities, while increasing bio-integration of the devices with the surrounding bone tissue. They are constructed of composite layers of allograft and / or autograft bone and a structural material, such as titanium alloy or carbon / graphite fiber composite. Cannulations within the device are loaded with a mixture of stem cells, particles of allograft and / or autograft bone, and bone growth factors, such as BMP-2. The cannulations are connected to the surface of the device via multiple fenestrations that provide pathways to supply the bone / stem cell mixture to the surface, allowing living bone tissue to grow and insure bio-integration. The devices can also have radiofrequency (RF) stimulation implantation within the structure of the implanted device, capable of responding to external RF stimulation of enhanced bone growth.
