Electroacoustically amplified drum and mounting bracket

An electroacoustically-amplified drum assembly consists of a hollow drum shell with a drumhead closing one or both end thereof and an acoustical air vent in the wall thereof. An acoustical microphone is positioned in the drum shell spaced from and free from any connection to the drumhead and has leads for connection through the acoustical vent to an external amplifier and speaker. An adjustable mount is secured on the interior surface of the drum shell without any break in the wall of the drum shell for supporting the microphone. The adjustable mount may be adjusted and set to establish a position for the microphone for minimizing microphone interference and optimizing proximity effect and sound quality. The drum may have air vent hardware positioned in the acoustical air vent opening and including electrical connections for connection to the external speaker and amplifier. The microphone mount may be supported by nuts on the inner ends of lug bolts extending through the drum shell wall for supporting the head tensioning lugs on the outer surface of the drum shell. An alternative embodiment uses magnets one the outer surface of the drum shell cooperating with magnets inside the drum to support the mount adjustably on the drum shell.

Electric percussion instruments

InactiveUS20060021495A1Optimization rangeBetter emulate acoustic percussion instrumentsElectrophonic musical instrumentsDrumheadParallel plate
An electric musical instrument transducer contains one or more air gapped parallel plate variable capacitors. Each variable capacitor in the transducer has one plate that comprises, covers, or is embedded within an acoustically emitting vibrating surface on a musical instrument (such as a drumhead or soundboard) while the other plate is a rigid surface held a fixed distance away. When the instrument is played, the vibrating surface causes vibrations directly (without using airborne sound as an intermediary) in the non-fixed plates of the variable capacitors, thus causing time-varying voltage oscillations in the variable capacitors that directly reflect the vibrational state, and therefore the sound, of the instrument. These voltage oscillations are then converted to signals that can be used by audio recording and amplification equipment.

Electronic percussion device and method

An electronic percussion device includes a drum shell, a drumhead as striking surface, vibration sensors, and a peripheral and a central vibration carrier. The vibration carriers abut against the drumhead to convey vibrations therefrom to the sensor(s). The central vibration carrier is a helicoidal spring. The peripheral vibration carrier is a rigid body of solid material supported by peripheral sensors disposed thereunder. Two electrical leads of each one of the peripheral sensors are correspondingly coupled in parallel to produce only two common output leads. An electronic sound module is configured to sample the sensors and employs software procedures to detect percussion strokes delivered on the drumhead, and to generate sounds accordingly. The software procedures use averaged and aggregated signals to provide accurate detection of position and intensity of a drum stroke. Alternative embodiments of the device use only a peripheral vibration carrier or only a central vibration carrier.

Drumhead

A drumhead for use in a percussion instrument is composed of multiple (e.g., two or three) plies of synthetic resin films, which are laminated together and are brought into close contact with each other when stretched across the opening of a hollow cylinder of a drum, for example. At least one air evacuation hole is formed at the center of the backside synthetic resin film or in proximity to the center of the backside synthetic resin film. Therefore, when the drumhead is stretched outwardly along a diameter direction of the opening of the hollow cylinder of the drum, remaining air between the films can be reliably evacuated from the air evacuation hole towards the exterior of the drumhead. Thus, it is possible to reduce unwanted loss in transmission of vibration between the films of the drumhead when beaten; hence, it is possible to realize good sound quality in the drum.

Drumhead tone control device

A drumhead tone control device employs an annular configuration of polyester film tightly adhered to the periphery of a drumhead membrane. The annular configuration of the tone control device includes radial and / or circumferential relief. The relieved tone control device disrupts transmission of vibrations reflected from the drumhead membrane / drum shell interface. Disruption of reflected vibrations improves the overall tonal quality of the drumhead while use of a tightly adhered polyester sheet close to the periphery of the drumhead playing surface minimizes undesirable alteration of the attack characteristics and fundamental tone of the drumhead.
