Selectively expanding spine cage, hydraulically controllable in three dimensions for enhanced spinal fusion

ActiveUS8454695B2Internal osteosythesisBone implantSpinal arthrodesisSpinal locomotion
A selectively expanding spine cage has a minimized diameter in its unexpanded state that is smaller than the diameter of the neuroforamen through which it passes in the distracted spine. The cage conformably engages between the endplates of the adjacent vertebrae to effectively distract the anterior disc space, stabilize the motion segments and eliminate pathologic spine motion. The cage enhances spinal arthrodesis by creating a rigid spine segment. Expanding selectively, the cage height increases and holds the vertebrae with fixation forces greater than adjacent bone and soft tissue failure forces in natural lordosis. Stability is thus achieved immediately, enabling patient function by eliminating painful motion. The cage shape intends to rest proximate to the anterior column cortices securing the desired spread and fixation, allowing for bone graft in, around, and through the implant.

Selectively Expanding Spine Cage, Hydraulically Controllable In Three Dimensions For Enhanced Spinal Fusion

Angular deformities can be corrected, and natural curvatures restored and maintained. The cage enhances spinal arthrodesis by creating a rigid spine segment, or if filled with compressible substances, the cage can be used for motion preservation between vertebral bodies. Expanding selectively (anteriorly, along the vertical axis of the spine) rather than uniformly, the cage height increases and holds the vertebrae with fixation forces greater than adjacent bone and soft tissue failure forces in natural lordosis. Stability is thus achieved immediately, enabling patient function by eliminating painful motion. The cage shape intends to rest proximate to the anterior column cortices securing the desired spread and fixation, allowing for bone graft in, around, and through the implant for arthrodesis whereas for arthroplasty it fixes to endpoints but cushions the spine naturally.

Greater distraction height is achieved without an increase in implant size through the use of interfitted stages.

Rigid spine reinforced polymer microelectrode array probe and method of fabrication

A rigid spine-reinforced microelectrode array probe and fabrication method. The probe includes a flexible elongated probe body with conductive lines enclosed within a polymeric material. The conductive lines connect microelectrodes found near an insertion end of the probe to respective leads at a connector end of the probe. The probe also includes a rigid spine, such as made from titanium, fixedly attached to the probe body to structurally reinforce the probe body and enable the typically flexible probe body to penetrate and be inserted into tissue, such as neural tissue. By attaching or otherwise fabricating the rigid spine to connect to only an insertion section of the probe body, an integrally connected cable section of the probe body may remain flexible.

Bionic quadruped robot with energy storage effect

InactiveCN104149871AWalk fastLarge front and rear stridesAuxillary drivesVehiclesEngineeringEnergy storage
The invention belongs to the field of bionic robots and relates to a bionic quadruped robot with energy storage effect. The rigid spine of the existing bionic quadruped robot is modified. The bionic quadruped robot comprises a front trunk, a rear trunk, a spine, a left front leg unit, a right front leg unit, a left rear leg unit and a right rear leg unit. The front trunk and the rear trunk are connected with front and rear ends of the spine, respectively. The spine can drive the front trunk to rotate relative to the rear trunk. The left front leg unit, the right front leg unit, the left rear leg unit and the right rear left leg unit have same structures and are connected to left and right sides of the front and rear trunks, respectively. The spine is added between the front and rear trunks; the whole shape is more approximate to a true quadruped animal; when the robot walks, the front and rear trunks allow a larger step through the spine pitching up or down, and the robot can walk faster; less energy is lost when the robot touches the ground, motion stability is improved, and utilization rate of energy is increased.

InactiveUS20100031626A1High trafficEfficient and even distributionLaminationLamination apparatusFiberCarbon fibers
A rocket engine has spaced apart inner and outer skins each unitarily formed in one piece from carbon fiber fabric. The inner skin is formed on a two-part mold that is separated and removed from the inner skin after it is cured. An oxidizer ring encircles the bottom of the engine and is in flow communication with flow channels between the skins. Oxidizer tubes are connected at one end to the ring and at their other end to support brackets on the engine. The oxidizer ring is formed as an integral part of the engine by extending the outer skin over an inflatable mold, which is deflated and removed from the ring after the ring is cured. The oxidizer tube is formed on a mold with a rigid spine that holds the shape of the mold until the oxidizer tube is cured. The spine and the mold are then removed.
