Keypad layout for alphabetic symbol input

Layouts for keypads are provided that have an improved combination of a regular of intuitive arrangement of alphabetic symbols of a language defined by letter characters of the Roman alphabet and an efficient distribution of the symbols to minimize input ambiguities. More particularly, the symbols are for the Pinyin alphabet which includes two main symbol groups thereof for forming Pinyin syllables. The various layouts employ a columnar-based arrangement for the symbols of the initial group. The symbols for the final group are parsed down to basic characters and are distributed in a row-based arrangement.

Method for assigning large sets of characters in different modes to keys of a number keypad for low keypress-data-entry ratio

A key assignment method assigns large sets of alphabetic and other characters and functions to the keys of a standard numeric keypad for text/data entry on an electronic device. Two letters are assigned in pairs to each key of the standard 12-key keypad in a first character mode, and other symbols, characters, or infrequently used letters are assigned in a second or more optional character modes. A mode selection key is provided to select between the modes. In the first character mode, a keypress of a key selects the first letter of the pair and two keypresses in succession selects the second letter. The letter pairs may be assigned in alphabetic order, except for infrequently used letters, such as ‘Q’ and ‘Z’, or in QWERTY order, or in pairs of a more frequently-used letter with a less frequently-used letter. By comparison to the standard phone keypad layout having an average KPD=2.2, this method can achieve a KPD=1.4 or lower. The standard directional arrow keys (RDI keys) may be used for mode selection in multiple character modes. Using the RDI mode selector can transform the conventional 12-key telephone keypad into the equivalent of a 60-key data entry layout (or expandable by 48 more keys for each additional mode keystroke used), thereby allowing operation comparable to a full QWERTY keyboard of characters, with enhanced symbols and functions, and/or with multi-language character sets.

Data Entry System and Method of Entering Data

A method and apparatus for entering words into a computer system. Letters contained in a desired word are entered by giving approximate location and directional information relative to any specified keyboard layout. The inputs need not correspond to specific keys on the keyboard, a sequence of ambiguous key-entries corresponding to individual words can be used to retrieve a word from the dictionary. The system tracks directional information of movement relative to a / the specific keyboard layout, reducing it to predetermined primary directions and translates this seemingly ambiguous information into accurate words from the dictionary. The system may also capture the user's intention (with regard to text entry) by observing the movements on the keyboard.

Staggered keyboard for a portable device

A staggered keyboard for use with a portable device is provided. The staggered keyboard includes a plurality of keys arranged into a plurality of rows of keys. For each row of keys, the labeling of the keys is arranged in either a linear or an arced relationship depending upon the key layout, but the key centers are staggered from key to key along at least two distinct reference lines or arcs so that adjacent keys can be placed in overlapping and / or contiguous configurations thereby minimizing the size of the keyboard layout. By staggering the key centers while maintaining a familiar layout of the key labels, typing efficiency can be maintained while the overall size of the keyboard is reduced.

Secure password management using keyboard layout

A password management service located either on a user computer or in the cloud intercepts a user's attempt to create an account on a Web site. The user enters a sequence of a physical key combination and the service assigns a particular keyboard layout for this Web site. The service generates a password by combining the key combination with the assigned keyboard layout and returns this password to the user or to the Web site. The service stores the name of the Web site in association with the designated keyboard layout. Upon a subsequent login attempt, the service again intercepts the user's typing of the same physical key combination, generates the same password by combining the key combination with the previously assigned and stored keyboard layout, and returns the generated password to the Web site for authentication. A keyboard layout for a site may be chosen by the user, may be selected by the service, or a random layout may be generated. The service enforces a password constraint of a site by adding in the required characters, by requiring the user to choose a new key combination, or by using a different keyboard layout.
