A key assignment method assigns large sets of alphabetic and other characters and functions to the keys of a standard numeric keypad for text/data entry on an electronic device. Two letters are assigned in pairs to each key of the standard 12-key keypad in a first character mode, and other symbols, characters, or infrequently used letters are assigned in a second or more optional character modes. A mode selection key is provided to select between the modes. In the first character mode, a keypress of a key selects the first letter of the pair and two keypresses in succession selects the second letter. The letter pairs may be assigned in alphabetic order, except for infrequently used letters, such as ‘Q’ and ‘Z’, or in QWERTY order, or in pairs of a more frequently-used letter with a less frequently-used letter. By comparison to the standard phone keypad layout having an average KPD=2.2, this method can achieve a KPD=1.4 or lower. The standard directional arrow keys (RDI keys) may be used for mode selection in multiple character modes. A stenotype keyboard utilizes pressure sensitive tactile sensors to register key presses and output interpreted keystrokes. The pressure sensitive tactile sensors are illuminated internally and create detectible changes to the electromagnetic radiation when compressed. The integrated process includes prompting a user for new language settings for both the operating system and the application programs. The language settings for the operating system may include language group support, user interface language, keyboard layout, preferences for standards and formats, and other settings. The language settings for the application programs may include preferences for a user interface language and a default language for use in the application programs. Once the language settings have been received from the user, the new settings may be applied and utilized in future operations of the computer system.

The invention relates to a system and method of mapping a layout of a keyboard onto a keypad in an electronic device is provided. The method comprising steps of: providing a definition of a map of a keyboard layout as a collection of segments of the keyboard layout; associating a set of characters in one segment of the segments to programmable keys in the keypad; and selectively associating the programmable keys with another set of characters in another segment of the segments based on a signal received from a navigation system. The system is embodied in an electronic device, including a wireless device.

A keyboard layout image is displayed on a touch display, so as to serve as a keyboard to perform a key-in function corresponding to the keyboard layout image through touching the touch display. The keyboard layout image displayed on the touch display may be defined by an end user. Furthermore, a plurality of such touch displays may be connected in series to form a bigger keyboard with more defined key images.
