A centralized database (sometimes abbreviated CDB) is a database that is located, stored, and maintained in a single location. This location is most often a central computer or database system, for example a desktop or server CPU, or a mainframe computer. In most cases, a centralized database would be used by an organization (e.g. a business company) or an institution (e.g. a university.) Users access a centralized database through a computer network which is able to give them access to the central CPU, which in turn maintains to the database itself.

Electronic discount couponing method and apparatus for generating an electronic list of coupons

A method and apparatus for distributing, generating, and redeeming discount Virtual Coupons TM , rebate or gift certificates or the like which may be used on conjunction with a frequency card program or the like. Virtual Coupons TM may be distributed electronically, for example, in the form of a diskette or CD-ROM software. Software on the diskette or CD-ROM may prompt a consumer to call a 1-800 number for a validation number or code. During the phone call, telemarketing personnel may request consumer demographic and or identification information which may be entered into a centralized database. Once the software is validated, a consumer may print out a list selected Virtual Coupons TM displayed on a Graphical User Interface (GUI). When a product is purchased, the UPC code of the product may be compared electronically with a list of Virtual Coupons TM authorized for a particular consumer. An appropriate coupon discount may then be applied and the Virtual Coupon TM may be considered "redeemed". Once redeemed, consumer ID information and Virtual Coupon TM information may be retrieved electronically and used to update a central database. Accurate data may then be produced illustrating which consumers or groups of consumers are redeeming which Virtual Coupons TM . Such data may be used for marketing purposes or to generated further diskettes for distribution targeting specific consumers or groups of consumers with specific classes of Virtual Coupon TM offerings. The use of Virtual Coupons TM eliminates or reduces fraud, and allows a frequency card discount to be applied only a limited number of times.

Method and apparatus for learning endpoint addresses of IPSec VPN tunnels

Customer Edge (CE) network elements can automatically learn IPSec tunnel endpoints for other CEs connected to sites in a Virtual Private Network (VPN) so that manual configuration of IPSec tunnel endpoints is not required and so that a centralized database of IPSec tunnel endpoints is not required to be separately maintained. According to an embodiment of the invention, a BGP export route policy is set on all CEs, so that when they announce their VPN routes in the standard format, the application of this export route policy changes the announcement to replace the BGP peering point address that would ordinarily be advertised with the IPSec tunnel endpoint address. When any given site receives a VPN route update formatted in this manner, it processes the VPN route update and learns from the update the IPSec tunnel endpoint as well as the associated VPN routes.

System and method of providing selected advertisements between subscribers utilizing video telephones

A system in a telecommunications network for providing selected advertisements to subscribers utilizing display screens to conduct a video telephone call. The system comprises a centralized database of subscriber advertising preferences, an information source, a calling subscriber's switch connected to the database and the information source, and a called subscriber's switch connected to the calling subscriber's switch. The database of subscriber advertising preferences stores advertising preferences for subscribers in the network, and is updated whenever a subscriber selects a displayed advertisement for more information. The information source stores a plurality of advertisements, and includes an advertisement selector which selects advertisements based on the advertising preferences for an identified subscriber such as the calling subscriber. The calling subscriber's switch retrieves the advertising preferences for the calling subscriber from the database and sends the preferences to the information source. The switch then retrieves the selected advertisements from the information source and generates a window on the calling subscriber's display screen which displays the retrieved advertisements. The retrieved advertisements are also sent to the called subscriber's switch for simultaneous display to the called subscriber.

Reusable self contained electronic device providing in-transit cargo visibility

InactiveUS6975224B2Easily and securely affixed to containerGood adhesionPackage recyclingLarge containersCentralized databaseService provider
A tracking and security device that is self-contained, portable and easily secured to a shipping container. Since the unit can be easily attached and removed from a container and is relatively inexpensive to produce, the unit can be purchased and controlled by the owners of cargo, rather than the transportation service providers or owners of shipping containers. The device monitors and records positional information at a daily or other frequency dictated by the cargo owner, and reports this information as well as other events, such as suspicious entry into the container, over a satellite communication system or other wireless communication network. Access to status and / or position information is provided a secure fashion through Internet access to a centralized database. The device empowers an importer / exporter, or really any small business engaged in long distance shipment of goods, to control in-transit, real-time status and location information for their cargo without relying on third party sources, such as transportation carriers, to provide such data or to pay their service fees.

Autonomous vehicle railroad crossing warning system

An autonomous vehicle collision / crossing warning system provides for simple, inexpensive and decentralized installation, operation and maintenance of a reliable vehicle collision / crossing warning system. The autonomous warning system preferably utilizes a single frequency TDM radio communication network with GPS clock synchronization, time slot arbitration and connectionless UDP protocol to broadcast messages among vehicles and components in the warning system. Adaptive localized mapping of components of interest within the warning system eliminates the need for centralized databases or coordination and control systems and enables new vehicles and warning systems to be easily added to the system in a decentralized manner. Preferably, stationary warning systems are deployed as multiple self-powered units each equipped to receive broadcast messages and to communicate with the other units by a low power RF channel in a redundant Master-Slave configuration. The communication schemes are preferably arranged for low duty cycle operation to decrease power consumption.

Response scoring system for verbal behavior within a behavioral stream with a remote central processing system and associated handheld communicating devices

A system, method and related devices for monitoring and improving the training and social eye contact and communication skills of developmentally challenged individuals such as autistic individuals and other individuals with special needs in improving their interpersonal communicating and other skills. A so called, TeachMe component of the system allows the defining of a students/patients long-term behavior or academic or social goal treatment in a hierarchical relationship of skills in treatment plans. It captures behavioral event within a ‘behavioral stream’ and in real time stores the ‘behavioral stream’ in a centralized database that can be accessed anywhere and anytime using the Internet. Procedures and materials used during the treatment are identified and data is stored in a central depository and can be displayed in a therapist's handheld device. The WatchMe component of the system and method monitors and obtains qualitative and quantitative information about the eye contact habits of a subject being trained or interviewed. It provides stimuli that promotes and encourages improvements in the eye contact habits of the subject.
