A needle protection safety package, instead of being enclosed in a pouch or other containment wrappings, has fitted thereto at respective ends thereof caps or sheaths so that both the needle and the end to which a syringe is adapted to mate remain enclosed and sterile. The safety package is further designed to prevent burring of the tip of the needle as the cap or sheath is removed from the needle portion of the package. A sharps container for (i) the safe storage and dispensing of unused pen needle assemblies and (ii) a safe means for receiving used pen needles and ejecting same into the container. The container comprises a housing within which is rotatably mounted a used pen needle receiving and ejecting means. Used pen needles are inserted into the receiving means. The receiving and ejecting means is rotated and, during the rotation, cam follower means connected to the ejecting means engages cam means within the housing to cause the ejection of the used pen needle into the housing. The housing also has a separate storage space for unused pen needle assemblies. Alternate structures provide for withdrawal of unused pen needle assemblies for dispensing. The dispensing can be done on a serial basis where the pen needle assemblies which are attached to a flexible tape for serial withdrawal from the housing through an exit opening. The dispensing can also be done on a bulk basis where a plurality of unused pen needle assemblies are transferred through the exit opening at the same time.

Method and apparatus for sharps protection

Devices and methods are disclosed for protecting individuals from the sharp ends of medical objects following use on a patient. Such sharp objects include hypodermic needles, scalpel blades, cannulae, trocars, and the like. The invention utilizes a disposable protective cover for the used sharp. The protective cover is designed to surround and embed the sharp in a permanent cover that is blunt and will not permit further puncture or cutting with the sharp. In an embodiment, the protective cover also absorbs any fluids on or in the used sharp and prevents any fluids from escaping the protective cover. The sharp cover is configured to irreversibly lock, once closed. A refillable or replaceable dispenser dispenses the protective covers at points of use. A disposable receptacle receives the used sharp embedded in the protective cover. When the receptacle is full, the entire receptacle may be discarded in a medical waste container.
