Key imaging system and method

A key imaging system and method for identifying and matching a key blank with an original key when duplicating an original key by placing the key on a supporting flat surface and forming images of the grooves and indentations on the shank of the original key by illuminating the lateral surface containing the grooves and indentations and imaging those grooves and indentations by reflecting light off of the surrounding reflective surface and scattering light off of the grooves and indentations. The resultant images are scanned and recorded by means of a digital video camera / scanner. The scanned image is relayed to a computer where it is saved in computer memory. The saved image is compared to previously stored known original key blank images for the purpose of indicating a precise duplicate key blank matching the original key.

Shape memory metal latch hinge deployment method

InactiveUS6889411B2Maximum stowage efficiencyLess susceptible to launch vibration damagePower-operated mechanismPinless hingesShape-memory alloyEngineering
A conductive hinge is made of a superelastic shape memory alloy such as nitinol (NiTi) having a large elastic strain limit for enabling the hinge to bend to a small radius during stowage and flexible return to a trained rigid hinge position by training the shape memory alloy to assume a predetermined deployed configuration when released from a stowage configuration. The hinge is trained by forging at a temperature above a training temperature. The hinge is stowed and released in the superelastic state to deploy solar cell panels as the hinges unfold to the trained deployed configuration.

Door hinge

An example hinge includes a hinge pin extending along an axis and a first knuckle for receiving the hinge pin. The first knuckle is rotatable about the axis. A second knuckle for receiving the hinge pin and is rotatable about the axis. At least one bearing limits relative rotation between the first hinge knuckle and the hinge pin. The example hinge assembly may include a tolerance ring between the hinge pin and the first knuckle to urge the bearing away from the axis. An example method of producing a hinge includes the steps of permitting a first hinge plate to move relative a hinge pin and limiting movement of a second hinge plate relative a hinge pin. The method biases a bearing adjacent the hinge pin to limit movement of the second hinge plate relative the hinge pin.

Information handling system housing lid with synchronized motion

An information handling system converts from a closed position to a tablet position by rotating a lid with a display 360 degrees about a hinge having synchronized and continuous motion. The hinge has first and second axles held distal by a spacer. A synchronizer translates motion of each axle to the other to provide fluid movement of the lid relative to the housing. For instance, first and second cables translate rotational motion with the disposition of a discontinuous figure eight between the first and second axles.

Novel modifications to a standard Pro-lok Blue Punch manual punch press machine have been developed which permit the modified machine to accurately and consistently cut Sargent brand L and R series keys to code. Modifications to the same machine are presented such that both Sargent L and R series keys may be cut to code on the same Pro-lok Blue Punch manual punch press machine. Primary features of the modifications are (1) moving the indexing stops from the lower jaw to the upward facing surface of the die and (2) providing two indexing stops on the die such that each stop is laterally positioned on opposite sides of the punch from the other.

Information handling system housing lid with synchronized motion provided by a flexible compressive member

An information handling system converts from a closed position to a tablet position by rotating a lid with a display 360 degrees about a hinge having synchronized and continuous motion. The hinge has first and second axles held in a spaced and substantially parallel orientation by a support. Method and apparatus for manufacturing hinges

The instant invention is a method and apparatus for assembling two hinge leaves. The apparatus includes an assembly for feeding a predetermined length of a wire pintle into a shear assembly. The shear assembly cuts the wire pintle to a specified length and locates the wire in a channel. Substantially simultaneously with the shearing of the wire, a punch and die assembly adjacent the shear assembly locates the two leaves of the hinge such that the barrels of the hinge are aligned. Once in position, a linear actuator drives the sheared length of wire pintle into the aligned hinge barrels to couple the two hinge leaves together. Once the pintle has been inserted, staking pins within the punch and die assembly impact select ones of the hinge barrels to keep the pintle in place. Also, disclosed is a novel method of manufacturing the two hinge leaves.

Friction control in hinge assembly

A vehicle hinge assembly including a first hinge member mounted to a vehicle body or a vehicle closure panel and a second hinge member mounted to the other of the vehicle body or the vehicle closure panel. A first contact member is fixed to the first hinge member and a second contact member is fixed to the second hinge member. The first contact member and the second contact member have first and second surfaces, respectively, that frictionally engage each other. The first contact member and the second contact member are arranged between the first hinge member and the second hinge member such that relative motion of the vehicle closure panel between an open position and a closed position causes relative frictional motion between the first contact member and the second contact member to provide a resistance for controlling the movement of the vehicle closure member.

Method of attaching and aligning a closure panel

A method of aligning and duplicating alignment includes welding a washer over a larger opening in a hinge once in an aligned position relative to a vehicle door. The door is mounted into an alignment fixture and the hinges are installed over threaded studs extending from the door. The washer is placed onto the threaded stud and tightened against the hinge, covering the larger opening in the hinge. The larger opening in the hinge allows movement of the hinge relative to the door for alignment. The washer defines an opening with a smaller opening sized to provide relatively little clearance for the threaded stud, and thereby maintain alignment between the door and hinge. The washer is permanently attached by a welding operation to allow duplication of door hinge alignment during reassembly.

Hinge for a portable computing device

A hinge for a portable computing device has a shaft, a rotating bracket and a stationary bracket. The shaft includes a first portion and a second portion. The first portion is a cylindrical tube. The cylindrical tube has an internal cavity. The second portion has an outer surface and a notch. The notch is formed in the outer surface of the second portion and communicates with the internal cavity of the cylindrical tube. Therefore, cables extending through the internal cavity of the cylindrical tube of the shaft will extend through the notch to electrically connect their corresponding devices in a base and a cover of the portable computing device. The connection of the cables to their corresponding devices is facilitated, because there is no obstruction in the notch, thereby increasing productivity.
