45 results about "Starter solenoid" patented technology

A starter solenoid is an electromagnet which is actuated to engage the starter motor of an internal combustion engine. It is normally attached directly to the starter motor which it controls. Its primary function is as the actuating coil of a contactor (a relay designed for large electric currents) which connects the battery to the starter motor proper.

Starter solenoid switch with highly reliable contacts

A starter solenoid switch according to the present invention includes a first and a second set of contacts that are disposed between a battery and a starter motor in parallel with each other. The first and the second sets of contacts are so configured that the second set of contacts is closed to supply a lighter electric current to the starter motor before the first set of contacts is closed to supply a heavier electric current to the same. The second set of contacts is composed of a second fixed contact and a second movable contact, one of which includes a low-resistance portion at one end thereof and a high-resistance portion that contains more carbon than the low-resistance portion. The low-resistance and the high-resistance portions are serially disposed along a conducting path of electric current from the battery to the starter motor, thereby ensuring reliability of the starter solenoid switch.

Capacitor-based powering system and associated methods

A system, capacitor having auxiliary cells, and associated methods for starting an engine is provided. The capacitor is an enhanced-power capacitor that provides enhanced cranking power. The capacitor is isolated from the battery and the rest of the engine's electrical system at preselected times. The capacitor is electrically connected to the alternator when the engine is running and is charged by the alternator. When the engine is not running, the capacitor is electrically isolated to prevent the capacitor discharging by powering accessory devices; the battery can power devices while the capacitor remains electrically isolated. During starting, the capacitor provides all the power supplied to the starter solenoid. If the battery is too weak to energize the electrical system during starting, an override allows the capacitor to provide power for all starting functions.

Starter motor assembly with soft start solenoid

A solenoid for a vehicle starter comprises a pull-in coil and a hold-in coil positioned axially adjacent to the pull-in coil. A plunger is positioned within the pull-in coil and configured to move in an axial direction when the pull-in coil is energized. The plunger is separated from a plunger stop in the axial direction by an air gap when the pull-in coil and the hold-in coil are not energized. When the pull-in coil and hold-in coil are energized, a shoulder of the plunger moves in an axial direction toward the plunger stop. The pull-in coil is positioned in the solenoid such that it is removed from the plunger stop in the axial direction. In contrast, the hold-in coil encircles the plunger stop.

Device and method for vehicle voltage stabilization

The invention relates to a device and method for vehicle voltage stabilization. Method for voltage stabilization during an engine starting event of a vehicle includes receiving, at a switch device module, an active Start_ON signal from a starter solenoid module indicating initiation of the engine starting event. At the switch device module, an auxiliary electrical energy storage device (ESD) is electrically coupled to one or more auxiliary loads within a predetermined delay since the active Start_ON signal was received. A primary ESD and a starter motor are electrically decoupled from the one or more auxiliary loads only after the auxiliary ESD has been electrically coupled to the one or more auxiliary loads. In response to a predetermined condition occurring while the primary ESD and the starter motor are electrically decoupled from the one or more auxiliary loads, the primary ESD and the starter motor are electrically coupled to the one or more auxiliary loads.

No-start diagnostics for powertrain with enabled starter

A method diagnoses a no-start condition in a powertrain having an engine and a starter system operable for starting the engine. The starter system includes a battery, solenoid relay, starter solenoid, and starter motor. The method includes recording starter data over a calibrated sampling duration in response to a requested start event when the solenoid relay is enabled, including a cranking voltage and engine speed. If no battery current sensor is used, the method derives a resistance ratio using an open-circuit voltage and a minimum cranking voltage of the battery. When such a sensor is used, the method derives a battery and starter resistance. A fault mode of the starter system is then identified via a controller using the starter data and either the resistance ratio or the battery andstarter resistances. A control action executes that corresponds to the identified fault mode.

Vehicular starter solenoid

Described embodiments include an aftermarket solenoid for a starting system of a vehicle. The solenoid includes a relay. The solenoid also includes an insulating cap with first and second control terminals, and first and second starter circuit terminals protruding through the cap. A control voltage between the first and second control terminals determines the resistance between the first and second starter circuit terminals, essentially creating a short between the starter circuit terminals in response to energizing the relay. Each of the terminals may he a threaded stud. The cap, the first control terminal, the second control terminal, the first starter circuit terminal, and the second starter circuit terminals are arranged so that the solenoid is pluggable into an original manufacturer wiring harness of the vehicle, avoiding the need for makeshift adjustments and modifications of various connections and / or of the original wiring harness of the vehicle.

Temperature-based diagnostics method for a starter island

A method of performing temperature-based diagnostics for motor starters within a physical grouping of motor starters is performed by determining a presently expected temperature operating range for each starter based on measuring operating temperatures of the starters; measuring their current draws, and evaluating the temperature and load draw data in light of compensation values assigned for the known power ratings of the starter and the starter's physical location within the grouping. With the presently expected temperature operating range of the starter determined, and the periodic monitoring of starter temperatures, when an individual starter's temperature exceeds its expected range, a diagnostic warning will be issued for that starter and / or for the control panel itself as a guide for preventative maintenance. Alternately, the warning may be issued for an unexpected temperature rise for a given rise in current draw, or for values exceeding an expected rate of temperature change.
