Provider Backbone Bridge Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE) is an approved telecommunications networking standard, IEEE 802.1Qay-2009. PBB-TE adapts Ethernet technology to carrier class transport networks. It is based on the layered VLAN tags and MAC-in-MAC encapsulation defined in IEEE 802.1ah (Provider Backbone Bridges (PBB)), but it differs from PBB in eliminating flooding, dynamically created forwarding tables, and spanning tree protocols. Compared to PBB and its predecessors, PBB-TE behaves more predictably and its behavior can be more easily controlled by the network operator, at the expense of requiring up-front connection configuration at each bridge along a forwarding path. PBB-TE Operations, Administration, and Management (OAM) is usually based on IEEE 802.1ag. It was initially based on Nortel's Provider Backbone Transport (PBT).

Method and apparatus for automatic topology discovery and resource management in PBB network

The invention discloses a method for automatic topology discovery and resource information management in a Provider Backbone Bridging Traffic Engineering (PBB TE) network. A first network node constructs an Intermediate System to Intermediate System (IS-IS) Hello message containing network topology information or an IS-IS Link State Affirm (LSA) message containing resource information, and transmits the message in the PBB TE network; and a second network node receives the message and records the network topology information or the resource information in the message to a local network topology information database or a resource information database. The invention also discloses a PBB TE network node device. The proposal of the method can achieve the automatic topology discovery and the resource information management in the PBB TE network.

Protection for provider backbone bridge traffic engineering

Network protection between endpoints includes both end-to-end and local section protection. A primary path between the endpoints includes a plurality of links, and is protected on an end-to-end basis by a protection path associated with different links. At least one sections of the primary path is also protected on a local basis, where a “section” is a link, ring, trunk or other portion of a network. One or more sections of the protection path may also be protected on a local basis. In response to detection of a fault condition, section protection is utilized to overcome the fault if possible, and otherwise end-to-end protection is utilized. Invoking section protection does not imply a switchover from the primary end-to-end path to the protection end-to-end path. Rather, the primary end-to-end path is rerouted in the affected section.

The method comprises the following steps of: configuring a PBB-TE which supports traffic engineering and a PBB-TE tunnel which supports the traffic engineering according to the difference between a node type and a link type; and transmitting a received message according to the configured PBB-TE tunnel. Methods and apparatuses for allocating backbone virtual local area network identifiers (BVIDs) to connection requests in a provider backbone bridging-traffic engineering (PBB-TE) network are described. During operation, a system (e.g., a network management system) can receive a set of connection requests for a set of connections that are desired to be set up in the PBB-TE network. Next, the system can allocate a BVID to each connection request in the set of connection requests so that, once the set of connection requests are set up in the PBB-TE network, conflicting connections in the PBB-TE network have different BVIDs.

The method is used when monitoring service instances (500) between a first bridge port and a second bridge port by exchanging CFM frames over each service instance. The CFM frame is received by the second bridge port where the complete ESP - 3-tuple is demultiplexed (504). The CCM frames may be.demultiplexed by a Full Traffic Engineering Service Instance Multiplex Entity which demultiplexes both the source address value and destination address value of the CCM frames.
