Abstract

The invention concerns a solid or semi-solid nutritional composition comprising proteins, lipids and digestible carbohydrates from at least two different sources, which provides 2520-3080 kilojoule per 100 g dry mass. The weight amounts of lipid to the sum of proteins and digestible carbohydrates is 2.6-3.8 to 1. The composition can be dissolved in water to provide a liquid food. The composition is especially useful for use as a nutritional formula for epileptic infants.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a palatable individual product which can be used as a ketogenic diet, which product is suitable for enteral use in epileptic patients from birth to 12 months of age, and which product contains a small amount of Trans fatty acids, high energy density, and relatively high levels of protein. Background technique [0002] The human body obtains the energy it needs mainly by eating and metabolizing proteins, lipids and digestible carbohydrates. In a typical Western diet, digestible carbohydrates provide the vast majority of energy (in many cases, more than 50%), and the conversion factor for digestible carbohydrates and protein is 4kcal or 16.8kJ per gram, The conversion factor for lipids is 9kcal or 37.8kJ per gram. Metabolism of digestible carbohydrates releases primarily glucose, the preferred energy source for the body. Under certain circumstances, most human cells can also use other organic compounds as energy source...
