Flexible annular stapler for closed surgery of hollow organs

A improved flexible annular stapler for joining annular organs (163, 164) is disclosed. The novel stapler features greater accuracy of operation and better control by the operator, as well as additional functions, such as internal illumination (76) and viewing facility (82), and accommodation of a large number of accessories, such as fibroscopes (90) and catheters. The novel stapler features easy attachability of both stapling jaws (18, 25) and easy detachability of the head (11). The novel features of the flexible stapler, and associated methods performed thereby, are particularly useful for closed surgery.

Motor controller incorporating an electronic circuit for protection against inrush currents

Inrush currents in the dc intermediate circuit of a motor controller necessitate the incorporation of protection circuits. These circuits usually take the form of a resistor inserted in series with the intermediate circuit, and the resistor is short-circuited after completion of inrush by a switch positioned in parallel with the resistor. To reduce cable-transmitted electrical noise an earthed noise-decoupling capacitor is added to the intermediate circuit, but it also requires protection against inrush currents. To minimise the number of components, a protection circuit is described which combines noise filtration and inrush protection. According to the invention, the inrush resistor has the form of a resistor network and is connected to a switch which via a controller alters the resistance of the resistor network, so that when the switch is open, the resistance to a differential current is greater than the resistance to a common mode current, and when the switch is closed, there is greater resistance to a common mode current than to the differential current.

Remote magnetic activation of hearing devices

A magnetic switch assembly for hearing devices designed for remote activation by the user is highly miniaturized with a self-contained latching mechanism. The switch is activated and deactivated by the user via a hand-held magnet placed in proximity to the hearing device. The switch assembly includes a miniature reed switch and a miniature latching magnet affixed directly to one of the reeds or the associated lead wire. Direct attachment minimizes the air gap between the latching magnet and a reed thus enabling latching with only an extremely small magnet. The latching magnet produces a magnetic field of adequate strength to hold the reeds together in electrical contact after the air gap between the reeds is closed by the user's placement of the external hand-held magnet in proximity thereto. But the latching magnet's field is of inadequate strength for unaided closure of the air gap between the reeds. Consequently, once the reeds are closed the latching magnet prevents separation thereof until the reeds are exposed to an external magnetic field of opposite polarity and sufficient strength to overcome the field produced by the latching magnet.

Method and systems for wireless communication for a field service system

A mobile field system comprises a service center that is connected to the office of a field service organization and number of customers of the field service organization via the Internet or another computer network. The service center is also connected to the mobile systems of technicians who work for the field service organization by a mobile communications system such as a wireless Internet service provider. One or more message queues may be used to increase the reliability of communications between the systems. By using such a queue, messages may not be lost and the communications can be made transparent to the user of the remote system.

Flexible dual-mode antenna for mobile stations

A dual-mode Mobile Station (MS) supports both a satellite mode and a cellular mode using a combined swivel-type cellular and satellite antenna. The combined antenna has on one end a quarter wave stub for the cellular mode, and at the other end a compressible quadrifilar helical antenna for the satellite mode. The satellite antenna is preferably made of a plastic film in the form of a cylinder, on which a metallized film is deposited. The plastic film is filled with a foam rubber that keeps its cylindrical form. In the cellular mode, the flexible satellite antenna is compressed between the main housing of the MS and a sliding lid on the side of the MS to occupy a volume that is only a fraction of its uncompressed volume. In the satellite mode, the lid is opened and the combined antenna is rotated 90 to 180 degrees, at which point the satellite antenna resumes its cylindrical form due to the foam rubber expanding or mechanical driving inside of the plastic film.

Actuating device for a lock, especially in a motor vehicle

The invention relates to an actuating device for a lock, especially a lock on the parcel shelf of a motor vehicle, comprising an actuating element (30) and a transmission element (20) which can be moved in a linear manner (20) and on which a catch device (21) is disposed, whereby the movement thereof impinges upon a trigger element (12) which interacts with an actuating rod assembly. The transmission element (20) is embodied as an axially displaceable shaft (20) which can be rotated by means of a central locking device (11) and is provided with an eccentrically arranged extension (22). One area of the actuating element (30) can be rotated by means of a locking cylinder (31) and is provided with an eccentrically arranged extension (32). Surface treating head assembly

A surface treating head assembly for an appliance such as a vacuum cleaner includes a head and a piston assembly operable to apply a force to the head. The piston assembly is connected to the main motor of the vacuum cleaner by a valve. When the valve is opened, suction airflow flows through tubes connecting the motor to the piston assembly. The resulting suction force causes the piston assembly to contract, thereby drawing the cleaner head downwards. Thus, the head is urged towards the floor surface so as to improve the efficiency of a cleaning operation.
