Adapter for human breast pumps

An air circuit is disclosed that communicates with a cycling, bi-directional or intermittent pressure source, splitting the output of the pressure source into two channels. One channel continues to cycle bi-directional or intermittent pressure, and a second channel employs a one-way valve allowing output of vacuum only. In one embodiment, this circuit can be used to actuate unidirectional, pulsating human breast milk expression devices that use vacuum to draw milk, while massaging the breast with pulsating pressure. The air circuit preferably includes an additional one-way valve, which is located upstream of the one-way negative pressure valve, for relief of excess positive pressure within the circuit. The negative channel output of the air circuit can contain a pressure regulation apparatus for end-user control of negative pressure to the expression devices.

The present disclosure relates generally to a composition for feeding an infant. More particularly, the disclosure relates to a nutritional composition for feeding an infant comprising a stem-cell deficient first component and a second component comprising breast milk stem cells (BSCs). The second component is added to the first component, and the BSCs partially or fully replenish the stem-cell deficient first component with respect to BSCs. In some embodiments the first component is stem-cell deficient human breast milk and the second component comprises BSCs from the infant's mother's own milk. The compositions of the present disclosure have been developed primarily as a personalized, nutritional composition providing the beneficial effects of an infant's mother's own BSCs to the infant while not being able to receive the full benefits of being breastfed directly. The present disclosure also relates to a composition for feeding an infant and to processes of their production. In particular, the disclosure relates to a composition for feeding an infant comprising a first and a second component, wherein the first component provides the majority of the nutritional value to said composition, and wherein the second component comprises at least one live bacterium from human breast milk or the lactating human mammary gland. The disclosure has been developed primarily as a composition for feeding a mother's own infant, wherein the composition comprises processed human breast milk with a substantially reduced live bacterial cell count as compared to unprocessed breast milk but which at least one live bacterium, from the mother's own breast milk, is added such as to partially or fully replenish the processed human breast milk with respect to the at least one live bacterium. More particular, the composition is a personalised composition for feeding the mother's own preterm infant. The present invention also related to the combination of BSC and bacterial replenishment as described herein.

Breast pump and cap for same

A breast pump for pumping human breast milk has a flexible pumping membrane and a stiff cap, which can be fitted onto said pumping membrane, this resulting in the formation of a pumping chamber for generating a negative pressure. The cap can be, or is, connected to a breast-shield unit via a suction line. The pumping membrane has an encircling collar with a step and a laterally projecting protrusion. The cap has, on its inner side, an encircling abutment region and also at least one form-fitting element, which is spaced apart from the encircling abutment region and establishes a form fit with the protrusion of the pumping membrane. The cap is positioned with a snap fit on the pumping membrane. In the abutment region (53), it establishes a joint frictional fit with a step of the pumping membrane and thus forms a seal. The snap-fit positioning of the cap on the pumping membrane is sufficient for the cap to be retained with sealing action on the pumping membrane.

Application of set of miRNAs in preparation of marker for screening early-stage breast cancers

The invention discloses application of a set of miRNAs in preparation of a marker for screening early-stage breast cancers. The invention discovers that free miRNAs with completeness and relative abundance quite accordant with mammary gland cells exist in human breast milk for the first time. Through comparison with abnormal miRNAs which are abnormally expressed by the breast cancers and are confirmed by existing researches, a set of breast milk free miRNAs suitable for potential application of the screening of the early-stage breast cancers are analyzed, 26 miRNAs are expected to be regulatedup in the development process of the early-stage breast cancers, and 12 miRNAs are expected to be regulated down in the development process of the early-stage breast cancers. The invention disclosesa theoretically feasible application detection scheme. By taking breast milk as a sample, the affection risk of the early-stage breast cancers is detected by detecting free miRNA markers related withthe breast cancers in the breast milk.

Breast milk ethanol screening system and method

InactiveUS20070207517A1Microbiological testing/measurementBreastfeeding (mother)Breast feed
A test kit detects presence of ethanol alcohol in human breast milk. The test kit includes an alcohol oxidase reactive in the presence of ethanol alcohol in breast milk and oxygen, an indicator having a visible color when not subjected to oxidizing agent, in sufficient amount for visible observance, and a peroxidase reactive in the presence of acetaldehyde and peroxide, to yield oxidizing agent, in sufficient amount to induce change to the visible color of the hydrogen donor indicator. The test kit is a sealed pack containing a test strip. The test strip is for one-time use, and disposable after testing. The test strip is handled by a tester, typically a breast-feeding mother. The mother contacts her breast milk lactate with testing portion of the test strip. The testing portion selectively reacts to alcohol, and not other components of breast milk. A reactive agent of the testing portion of the test strip changes color in the presence of alcohol. The mother observes the result to determine if there is presence of alcohol in the breast milk.
