Problems solved by technology

[0008] While cow's milk also contains casein and whey and is used to feed infants, any attempt to use cow's milk instead of human breast milk to feed newborns has similar adverse effects on reintroduction to breastfeeding

Embodiment Construction

[0022] Forty breastfed human neonates were divided into 4 experimental groups. One experimental group followed a normal breastfeeding regimen without supplements. The second experimental group received 6 daily supplements with 5ml water per dose containing 0.3gm whey and 0.2gm sodium caseinate. A third experimental group received 6 daily supplements of 5 ml of a solution consisting of 3.6 gm of aspartic acid, 694 mg of sodium hydroxide and 226 mg of potassium hydroxide mixed with 100 ml of distilled water (pH about 6.1).

[0023] A fourth experimental group received 6 daily supplements with 5 ml of water per dose containing 0.5 gm of the casein hydrolyzate portion of Nutramigen(R) infant formula. Nutramigen  is a commercial infant formula available from Mead Johnson Company. Mead Johnson kindly provided us with the casein hydrolyzate portion of the above recipe (no carbs, fat or vitamins). They obtained casein hydrolyzate from standard casein using well-known procedures. ...

Abstract

Disclosed herein are infant supplements containing casein, a salt of casein, whey and / or a casein hydrolysate which are free of carbohydrate, and methods for their use with breast feeding babies. The supplements are designed to suppress serum bilirubin levels and the incidence and severity of neonate jaundice. In one form, a dose of such a supplement is mixed with human breast milk and fed to the neonate.

Description

[0001] Statement on federally funded research / development to be determined. Background of the invention [0002] The present invention relates to methods of lowering serum bilirubin and reducing the incidence and severity of neonatal jaundice. More specifically, the present invention relates to the use of casein (or casein salts such as sodium caseinate), whey and / or certain hydrolyzed casein preparations as breastfeeding supplements without interfering with breastfeeding. [0003] Pediatricians recommend breastfeeding as the most preferred method of feeding the human newborn. However, breastfeeding has been consistently associated with elevated levels of neonatal jaundice. Neonatal jaundice often occurs in the first month of life (especially within the first week of life). [0004] Bilirubin is the red bilirubin formed in the catabolism of certain compounds such as hemoglobin. Human infants produce more bilirubin per unit ...
