Catheter tracking with phase information

The present invention discloses a method for determining the position and / or orientation of a catheter or other interventional access device or surgical probe using phase patterns in a magnetic resonance (MR) signal. In the method of the invention, global two-dimensional correlations are used to identify the phase pattern and orientation of individual microcoils, which is unique for each microcoil's position and orientation. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, tracking of interventional devices is performed by one integrated phase image projected onto the axial plane and a second image in an oblique plane through the center of the coil and normal to the coil plane. In another preferred embodiment, the position and orientation of a catheter tip can be reliably tracked using low resolution MR scans clinically useful for real-time interventional MRI applications. In a further preferred embodiment, the invention provides real-time computer control to track the position of endovascular access devices and interventional treatment systems, including surgical tools and tissue manipulators, devices for in vivo delivery of drugs, angioplasty devices, biopsy and sampling devices, devices for delivery of RF, thermal, microwave or laser energy or ionizing radiation, and internal illumination and imaging devices, such as catheters, endoscopes, laparoscopes, and related instruments.

Self-indexing coupling for rotational angioplasty device

A rotational angioplasty device having a handle housing and an exchangeable drive shaft cartridge. The handle housing includes a rotatable prime mover carried by a prime mover carriage which is longitudinally movable with respect to the handle housing. The exchangeable drive shaft cartridge includes a tubular core element, a longitudinally extendible tube, a catheter and a rotatable drive shaft which, near its distal end, has an abrasive tissue removal implement. The cartridge is detachable from the handle housing, the longitudinally extendible tube is detachable from the prime mover carriage, and the drive shaft together with its tissue removal implement may be attached to and detached from the prime mover, thereby permitting the exchangeable drive shaft cartridge to be selectively attached to and detached from the handle housing. A coupling is provided which connects the longitudinally extendible tube to the prime mover carriage while indexing the relative position of the longitudinally extendible tube and the proximal portion of the drive shaft.

Catheter System Having Imaging, Balloon Angioplasty, And Stent Deployment Capabilities, And Method Of Use For Guided Stent Deployment

InactiveUS20060282153A1Shorten the timeRapid and convenient balloon angioplastyStentsBlood vesselsInsertion stentBalloon catheter
A catheter system has a balloon angioplasty device disposed about a common lumen near its distal end. The balloon catheter is pre-fitted with a stent which is deployed when the balloon is inflated. The common lumen is in communication with multiple lumens within a proximal region of the catheter body to allow for positioning of the catheter over a movable guide wire and convenient delivery of imaging or interventional devices to a desired region of a body passageway being treated. The procedure for stent deployment optionally includes steps of imaging a lumen by ultrasound before and after stent deployment to identify the site at which a stent is needed, to confirm that the stent is being and has been deployed at a longitudinal position which does not overlap a branched segment of the body passageway, and to ensure that the stent has been radially opened to an optimum diameter.

Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty device with integral embolic filter

A percutaneous transluminal angioplasty device having an embolic filter mounted to the catheter shaft at a location distal to the angioplasty balloon and downstream from the blockage to capture embolic particles that may be set loose into the blood stream as the angioplasty procedure is performed. The embolic filter is normally collapsed against the catheter shaft to facilitate introduction and withdrawal of the device to and from the operative site. Once the angioplasty balloon is properly positioned, however, means operatively associated with the embolic filter are actuated to erect the filter to operatively position a filter mesh across the lumen of the vessel.
