164 results about "Flying squirrel" patented technology

Flying squirrels (scientifically known as Pteromyini or Petauristini) are a tribe of 50 species of squirrels in the family Sciuridae. They are not capable of flight in the same way as birds or bats but are able to glide from one tree to another with the aid of a patagium, a furry, parachute-like membrane that stretches from wrist to ankle. Their long tail provides stability in flight. Anatomically they are very similar to other squirrels but have a number of adaptations to suit their life style; their limb bones are longer and their hand, foot bones and distal vertebrae are shorter. Flying squirrels are able to steer and exert control over their glide path with their limbs and tail.

Haven for use with a bird feeder

A haven for use with a bird feeder is provided that includes a collapsible spiral rod assembly having an upper end and a lower end. The spiral rod haven has a plurality of spiral convolutions and is selectively movable between a collapsed position and an extended position. The spiral rod haven defines an interior compartment when in its extended position. A bird feeder is positioned within the interior of the compartment. The bird feeder may be either a collapsible bird feeder, a tube-type bird feeder or any other type of bird feeder that may be positioned within the interior compartment of the haven. Small birds may gain access to the bird feeder by moving through adjacent convolutions while the convolutions prevent large birds or squirrels from entering the interior of the haven.
