Apparatus and methods provide distal protection while accessing blood vessels within a patient's vasculature. A flexible sheath and distal protection element, e.g., a balloon or filter, are carried by a stiffening member. The sheath is lubricious and has a relatively thin wall, thereby providing a collapsible/expandable guide for delivering fluids and/or instruments. The sheath is advanced into a blood vessel in a contracted condition, expanded to an enlarged condition to define a lumen, and the distal protection element is deployed within the vessel beyond the sheath. Fluids and/or instruments are introduced into the vessel via the sheath lumen, the distal protection element retaining the fluids and/or capturing emboli released by the instruments. Upon completing the procedure, the sheath, distal protection element, and stiffening member are removed from the vessel.

A method and system of performing an intravascular procedure at a treatment site in a vessel of a patient. A device creates a seal to prevent the flow of blood during the treatment of vascular disease. A seal may be formed between the distal inside diameter of a sheath or catheter such as a guide catheter as well as within a vessel, such as an artery or vein. An elongated device having a distal portion extending from the catheter and having a fluid impermeable membrane disposed about at least the distal end of the device is used to seal the vessel. The system includes a device to occlude blood flow and a distal protection device to filter or remove embolic debris.

The delivery device has a receiving end configured to receive the emboli capturing device, and retains at least the mouth of the emboli capturing device in a radially retracted position.

A distal protection device comprising a catheter having a first strut movable from a collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration having a first dimension and a second strut movable from a collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration having a second dimension larger than the first dimension. Movement of the first strut deploys filter material to a first position having a first deployed dimension and movement of the second strut to a first position deploys filter material to a second deployed dimension larger than the first expanded dimension.

A steerable guidewire apparatus for use during percutaneous catheter interventions such as angioplasty or stent deployment. A protection element comprising a filter or an occluder is mounted near the distal end of the steerable guidewire, which guides a therapeutic catheter. The guidewire comprises a hollow shaft movably disposed about a core wire. The shaft and core wire control separation of the ends of the protection element, causing transformation of the protection element from a deployed configuration to a collapsed configuration. A self-expanding stent and stent delivery system are provided for treating vascular diseases such as partially occluded blood vessels within the brain. The self-expanding stent is preferably mounted on an elongated core wire including proximal, intermediate and distal cylindrical members disposed about the core wire. The proximal, intermediate, and distal cylindrical members are spaced apart such that first and second gaps are formed. The stent, which includes anchor members, is mounted on the intermediate cylindrical member such that the anchor members interlock within the gaps between the cylindrical members. The self-expanding stent and elongated core wire are disposed within a delivery lumen of a balloon catheter such that the balloon catheter compresses and constrains the stent about the intermediate cylindrical member to thereby interlock the stent onto the core wire. The elongated core wire further includes an expandable capture basket attached to the distal end of the elongated core wire in order to capture embolic debris released during the angioplasty of the blood vessel and the deployment of the self-expanding stent.

A distal protection device comprising a catheter, a flexible member movable from a first position to a second looped position extending laterally with respect to the catheter, such that a first loop opening extends substantially in a direction of blood flow as the first loop opening extends in a plane substantially parallel to a transverse axis of the catheter, and filtering material movable from a collapsed position to an expanded position in response to movement of the flexible member.

An intravascular, distal protection device including a braided mesh that may be selectively transformed between a collapsed configuration, a filter configuration and an occlusive configuration by mechanical or thermal operation. Alternatively, the distal protection device may include a non-inflatable occlusion valve located within the mesh and actuated by the same mechanical operation that transforms the braided mesh.

Distal protection filter and method of using the same. A distal protection filter may be coupled to an elongate shaft. The filter includes a filter material coupled to a filter frame. The present invention relates generally to perfusion catheters and distal protection devices. According to an embodiment, the present invention includes a distal protection filter comprising an elongate shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, a distal protection device disposed at the distal end, a coupling member that couples the elongate shaft to the distal protection device, and a first space between the coupling member and the elongate shaft. A method of filtering debris from a blood vessel is also disclosed.
