Problems solved by technology

[0006] The problem with the shape of these airbags used outside motor vehicles is that they come into contact with the human body first in a crash, they don't provide enough deceleration distance for pedestrians to dissipate the energy, or they only cover the area in front of the vehicle

Embodiment Construction

[0047] FIG. 1 shows a front area 10 of a motor vehicle 1 on which is located an airbag 2 according to the invention for protecting pedestrians outside the motor vehicle 1 , where 3 denotes a pedestrian. The airbag 2 shown in FIG. 1 is in a fully deployed and inflated state.

[0048] The airbag 2 contains in its lower region a contact region 21 which is farthest from the body 1 in a direction perpendicular to the vertical axis of the vehicle compared to other regions of the airbag. In this embodiment, the contact area 21 of the airbag 2 is further away from the vehicle body 1 in the forward direction of the vehicle. In the event of a collision, the first collision of the airbag 2 and the pedestrian 3 takes place at this contact area 21 . In such an arrangement, the contact area 21 comes into contact with the pedestrian 3 at the center of gravity of the pedestrian 3 , as shown in FIG. 1 in the area of the lower leg 30 of the pedestrian 3 .

Abstract

The invention relates to a device for protecting a person outside a motor vehicle, especially pedestrians or cyclists, said device comprising at least one inflatable gas bag which acts outside the motor vehicle. When inflated, said gas bag ( 2 ) comprises a contact region ( 21 ) in the lower region thereof in relation to the motor vehicle (1), for the first contact with a person in the event of a collision, said contact region being located further away from the body ( 1 ) of the motor vehicle than other regions of the gas bag ( 2 ), perpendicularly in relation to the vertical axis of the motor vehicle. The gas bag ( 2 ) also comprises an impact surface ( 20 ) which is adjacent to the contact region ( 21 ) and absorbs the impact of the person (3) after the first contact. The invention thus provides an improved device for protecting people outside motor vehicles, which reduces the known disadvantages of prior art.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a device for protecting persons outside a motor vehicle, which device complies with the characterizing clauses of claims 1 , 14 , 20 , 30 and 32 . Background technique [0002] Accidents involving pedestrians or other individuals outside of a motor vehicle have serious consequences due to the high risk of injury from a collision with the rigid body of a motor vehicle. In particular, in a collision, the human body can also be injured by protruding parts such as windshield wipers, and in the region of the window frame. Due to the lack of an energy-absorbing "squeeze belt" prepared for a human body that weighs less than the vehicle body, the kinetic energy of the entire motor vehicle in an accident is actually applied immediately and directly to the location of the vehicle involved in the accident without shock absorption. On the human body outside the motor vehicle. [0003] Airbags are therefore provided outside the motor vehi...
