Abstract

Disclosed is a cost-effective method for purifying and acidifying carboxylic acids, including organic acids and amino acids. The method involves removing impurities by allowing the anionic form of the carboxylic acid to bind to an anion exchange column and washing the column. The carboxylic anion is displaced as carboxylic acid by washing the resin with a strong inorganic anion. This method is effective in removing organic carboxylic acids and amino acids from a variety of industrial sources, including fermentation broths, hydrolysates, and waste streams.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] Industrial fermentation broths, hydrolysates and waste liquors are substantial sources of carboxylic acids including organic acids such as succinic acid and amino acids. These carboxylic acids are used in many important commercial applications. [0002] For example, succinic acid, a four-carbon dicarboxylic acid, is likely to become an important chemical commodity. Succinic acid is useful as an intermediate in the synthesis of many important intermediates and as a specialty chemical in the consumer goods industry. As a daily chemical, succinic acid can replace many benzene-based daily necessities and petrochemical intermediates, which can lead to a significant reduction in pollution caused by the production and consumption of more than 250 benzene-derived chemicals.
