Abstract

The present invention provides a biodegradable carrier and delivery system for physiological, pharmacological and biologically active substances (BAS). Biodegradable carriers were prepared by mixing biodegradable polymers with plasticizers by a novel solvent evaporation method. The specific methods include: first dissolving the biodegradable polymer or copolymer and the plasticizer or the mixture of the plasticizer in the volatile solvent or the mixture of the volatile solvent, and then decompressing or heating or both to evaporate the volatile solvent. Biodegradable release systems can be used as fillers or spacers in vivo. BAS can be added at any step during or after the preparation of the biodegradable carrier or before use of the bioreleasable system. The biodegradable release system can control the release of BAS over a desired period of time. The biodegradable carrier or the BAS-loaded biodegradable release system can be injected, implanted, painted or taken to be applied to animals, birds and humans.
