A docking adapter capable of cooling a memory storage device such as a hard disk drive includes a carrier and a rack. The carrier has a face with a vent, a backplane, a first lateral side and second lateral side extending perpendicularly from the face to the backplane. At least one lateral side of the carrier has a periphery defining an opening. The rack has a first lateral rail and a second lateral rail configured for receiving the carrier. The carrier includes a fan mounted on the lateral rail of the rack to blow air through the opening of the carrier. In an alternate embodiment of the invention, the fan is mounted on the carrier and the rack has a lateral opening. In each case, air is vented directly from the carrier to cool the hard disk drive.

A hard disk anchoring apparatus for retaining a hard disk with a plurality of screw holes includes a coupling seat, a fixed bracket and a movable bracket. The fixed bracket is fixedly coupled with the coupling seat. The movable bracket is movably hinged on the coupling seat. A coupling blade is provided to couple the fixed bracket and the movable bracket. The fixed bracket and the movable bracket each have fasteners matching the screw holes formed on two sides of the hard disk. The movable bracket may be swiveled to close to the fixed bracket and coupled through the coupling blade. Thus the hard disk is retained by latching the movable bracket and the fixed bracket.

Disk drive enclosure

Noise is reduced in a disk drive enclosure by using vibration damping materials on the inside surface of the enclosure. These materials and their placement on the inside surface of the enclosure reduce noise without thermally insulating the disk drive. A temperature controlled fan may be used to remove heat by convection while generating a minimum amount of noise. The connection between the disk drive and the external connector of the disk drive enclosure is made more reliable by using a printed circuit board instead of a cable. Because a printed circuit board has a fixed location and fixed layout, variability among disk drive enclosures can be minimized. Also, errors in manufacturing of the disk drive enclosure can be reduced. To facilitate the use of the disk drive in a stripe set, the disk drive enclosure has a set of mechanical interlocks that permit the enclosures to be stacked vertically. In one embodiment, the mechanical interlocks are constructed in a manner that permits stacking in unlocked and locked configurations. The locked configuration may be made permanent using an additional locking mechanism. These mechanical interlocks also may be used to support the enclosure on a desktop. The mechanical interlocks also may be constructed so that they can slide on a rail, permitting the enclosure to be used in a rack mount. The rack mount also may be provided with a quick-release mechanism that interacts with the mechanical interlocks to hold the disk drive enclosure in the rack mount.

External desktop dock for a cartridge-based data storage unit

An external docking station for a removable data storage unit, allowing it to communicate with a computer system via a standard interface connection, such as a USB connector. In one implementation, the present invention provides a docking station that, in a locked or closed mode, locks a removable data storage unit into place via a latch. In one implementation, the docking station includes a motorized, geared lever assembly that simultaneously unlocks and ejects the removable data storage unit from the docking station. In one implementation, a spring biases the latch to maintain the docking station in an open position for receipt of a removable data storage unit. In one implementation, after the user presses the eject button, the present invention delays ejection of the removable data storage unit until the hard disk drive is no longer in use, thereby preventing possible damage to the drive media and / or read-write heads.
