Partitioning online databases

The present invention extends to methods, systems, and computer program products for partitioning online databases. Online database operations, such as, for example, SPLIT, MERGE, and DROP, are used to alter the arrangement of partitions in a federated database. A SPLIT operation splits rows at one partition across a plurality of other partitions. A MERGE operation merges rows at a plurality of partitions in to one partition. A DROP operation shifts responsibility for rows of data from one partition to another partition and then drops the rows from the one partition.

Common interface to access catalog information from heterogeneous databases

Various embodiments of a method, system and article of manufacture to access metadata from a plurality of data servers from a federated database management system are provided. In one embodiment, a request for metadata, from a client application, is received by the federated database management system. Data servers which are accessible from the federated database management system are identified. For each data server, metadata describing data of a data source of that data server is retrieved in accordance with the application request. The retrieved metadata from each of the data servers is aggregated to produce an aggregated result in a uniform format. The aggregated result is provided. In another embodiment, for each data server, a source metadata request for metadata of that data server is generated in accordance with the application request and a source metadata application programming interface. A view is created based on the source metadata request for metadata for each data server.

Method for dynamically finding relations between database tables

A method and system are provided for dynamically relating tables in a federated database based upon a data manipulation language in a query transaction. After the start of a transaction has been detected, a data manipulation language from the transaction is extracted and evaluated to determine the table(s) and column(s) referenced by the transaction language. The data relation output unit determines the relationship(s) between the extracted table(s) and column(s) in real-time and conveys this information through a visual display.

Fee-based model based on database federation and query support

A method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for calculating fees for accessing components of a federated database are disclosed. Generally, the federated database may be composed of database components exposed through an externalized data model by a first entity combined with database components from a second entity. The second entity defines a data model describing the structure of the database components made available to the first entity. Using the externalized data model from the second entity, the first entity may construct a composite data model defining the structure of the federated database. The second entity may further define a fee schedule describing how fees are to be calculated for accessing data from the database components described by the externalized data model.

The mapping function may be used with a mapping table storing sets of key values of different data sources, with each set corresponding to a given entity. In another embodiment, the mapping function may call a web service configured to translate key values. In yet another embodiment, federated queries may be specified in terms of attributes, which may be matched to key values.

When the record has been updated or inserted, the data structure is modified to indicate that the logical partition storing the record is up-to-date. When a read request is received, the record is read from an up-to-date logical partition storing the record.
