A PIV window dressing assembly with integral, built-in tubing anchors for the protection of a PIV catheter insertion site is disclosed that is interchangeably usable on both a right or left-hand side insertion site and that resists detachment from a patient's skin during use. The dressing assembly includes a fabric layer that is bounded by an edge. The fabric layer has an adhesive side, an opposite non-adhesive side, and at least one opening therein to allow for viewing therethrough. At least one reinforcement member is disposed between the fabric layer edge and the opening. The reinforcement member is adhered to the fabric layer adhesive side. A transparent film layer having an adhesive skin adhering side and an opposite non-adhesive side closes each of the openings in the fabric layer. The film layer non-adhesive side is adhered to the fabric layer adhesive side.

Devices and methods are provided for sealing a catheter insertion site to maintain sterility. In one embodiment, a catheter dressing is provided that includes an adhesive plate configured for attachment to the skin of a patient and a flexible sheath that extends proximally from the adhesive plate. The sheath can be capable of longitudinal extension from a compressed to an extended state and can be configured in its extended state to surround an external segment of a catheter implanted in the patient and circumferentially seal to a portion of the external segment at a distance from the adhesive plate. The dressing can also be configured to restrict longitudinal movement of the catheter while at the same time permitting non-longitudinal movement. One-piece rigid or semi-rigid dressing bodies are also disclosed, as are various methods and devices for facilitating removal and or replacement of a catheter dressing.

A vascular compression apparatus and method for applying pressure onto an area of a patient generally including a blood vessel and a wound site, such as a blood vessel puncture, after a cannulated procedure for the purpose of controlling bleeding and achieving hemostasis. The vascular compression apparatus includes a handle, a shaft and a pad. The shaft extends generally downward from the center of the bottom side of the handle. The pad is connected generally off-center of its top side to the bottom end of the shaft. The bottom side of the pad is convex to allow the vascular compression device to be rocked back and forth. In use, the pad is generally placed proximal to the catheter insertion site and over the blood vessel containing the catheter. The device is rocked proximally to control blood flow while removing the catheter. After the catheter is removed from the puncture site, the device is rocked distally to the puncture site, where pressure is applied until hemostasis is achieved.

The invention refers to a stabilization device for attaching and securing a catheter to the skin of a patient in order to maintain the catheter correctly placed through a catheter insertion site. The stabilization device includes a catheter clipping element which is attached to an anti-allergic adhesive pad. The catheter clipping element includes a clipping body that ends in open arms for easy and convenient clipping and unclipping of a catheter, cannula, catheter or cannula terminal adapter, or the like. The clipping body is oriented outwards from the top surface of the pad in a transverse direction, a vertical direction, or both transversely and vertically, in order to facilitate clipping and unclipping. A longitudinal axis of the clipping body can be tilted towards the pad top surface in order to enhance stabilization and favor correct orientation of the catheter towards the insertion site.

Devices and methods are provided for inserting a sterile catheter, and for maintaining a sterilely sealed catheter and catheter insertion site over time. In one embodiment, a four-part integrated system is provided that includes (1) a novel vascular catheter with integrated uniform diameter mounting, capping, and needle safety procurement features; (2) a novel vascular catheter dressing designed to specifically mate with and seal to this vascular catheter to achieve a sterile seal both at the catheter-skin insertion site and the catheter-dressing exit site; (3) a hub protection and sterilizing apparatus that serves to stabilize, protect, and sterilize the working end of the catheter hub as it protrudes from the sterile dressing, and that also helps to improve the ergonomics of the catheter-dressing complex in order to avoid snagging on clothing etc.; and (4) a whole dressing accessory secondary cover and securement device. Together, the components of this system work in a novel fashion to achieve a sterile, sealed, and fully secure vascular access site. While each of the four components can work together as part of an integrated system, each component can also be utilized individually, in any combination, or in conjunction with existing dressing-catheter technologies.

A catheter and dressing assembly is disclosed including a dressing having a distal adhesive plate configured for attachment to a skin region surrounding a catheter insertion site to provide a first circumferential seal around the catheter at the insertion site, a dressing body extending from the adhesive plate and configured to surround a catheter segment external to the insertion site and a proximal sealing element. The assembly further includes a two-part catheter having a first distal part consisting of a hub base bonded to a tubular catheter body; and a second proximal interconnector-cap that is adapted to couple to the distal hub base, whereby the attachment of the interconnector-cap to the hub-tubular body portion of the catheter establishes at least one continuous fluid pathway extending from a proximal end of the interconnector-cap to a lumen of the catheter and wherein either the hub base or the interconnector cap further comprises a mating feature for mating to the proximal sealing element of the dressing such that the dressing and interconnector-cap provide a second circumferential seal around the catheter body.

The device disclosed herein may be affixed over a transparent dressing overlying the catheter entry point, or may be used independent of such a dressing. The device may be affixed to the catheter insertion site using an adhesive or fastening band, or through other methods. Depending on context, the device may be used continuously or periodically, and may be affixed such that it is directly abutting a transparent dressing or directly adjacent to the skin surface, or it may be spaced a certain distance from the skin. If spaced from the skin, light may be directed from the light sources, either directly or indirectly through optical conduits. Preferably the light sources will be positioned such that light from the light sources overlaps at one or more areas on the skin, especially the catheter entry point.

Devices and methods are provided for sealing a catheter insertion site to maintain sterility. In one aspect of the invention, mounting handle/dressing assemblies and kits are disclosed for creating a sterile sealed environment around a catheter insertion site. For example the dressings of the present invention can be pre-disposed around a mounting handle and connector. The connector is joined to the proximal end of the catheter and then the dressing can be slid along the mounting handle until it surrounds the insertion site. Once the dressing is adhesively applied to the skin and locked into place by an annular fitting between the dressing and the connector, the handle can be removed and discarded, leaving only the dressing, and catheter connector in place. The catheter connector preferably has a needle-free connector port at its proximal end for connection to IV lines or other infusion devices.

A protective cover for an affected area of a patient, particularly associated with an insertion site of a catheter or other puncture or opening in a patient's skin, comprising a body portion including an aperture, and a window portion, wherein the body portion and window portion each optionally comprises an antimicrobial composition. Aspects of the present invention provide articles, systems and kits for covering an incision, wound or catheter insertion site with a protective cover, and methods of using and making the protective cover.

A window dressing includes a primary layer having a window for viewing a catheter insertion site. The primary layer includes an adhesive layer on a lower, skin-contacting face of the primary layer. A transparent layer covers the window and adheres to the upper surface of the primary layer. An ultrasonic transmission layer is positioned below the primary layer, where the transmission layer comprises a layer of hydrogel. A support structure has a stiffness that is greater than the primary layer and has an adhesive layer on the lower surface of the support structure. The support structure adhesive layer adheres the support structure to the upper surface of the primary layer.
