Problems solved by technology

The capacity of the database server may not be sufficient to meet the demand for it
Second, there may be performance issues where the access time of the centralized database server may be too long for real-time applications
Third, there may be memory constraints on the centralized database server
[0010] This scheme, while simple, has significant drawbacks in that it can generate very large message traffic sending requests and acknowledgments between processing elements
Another potential drawback of this approach is that it requires data to be accessed in the database

Embodiment Construction

[0034] discussed below Figures 1 to 7 , and the various embodiments used to describe the principles of the invention in this patent document are for illustration only and should not be construed in any way to limit the scope of the invention. The principles of the invention are explained using a wireless communication network. However, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the principles of the invention may be implemented in any suitably configured communications network.

[0035] figure 1 An overview of a typical wireless network 100 is illustrated. Wireless telephone network 100 includes a number of cell sites 121-123, each cell site comprising one of base stations BS101, BS102 or BS103. Base stations 101-103 are operable such that they communicate with a number of mobile stations (MS) 111-114. The mobile stations 111-114 may be any suitable wireless communication devices, including conventional cellular phones, PCS handsets, portable computers, telemetry devic...

Abstract

For use in a mobile telecommunications network comprising a mobile switching center, a plurality of subscribers, and a plurality of processing elements within a processing element unit, a system and method is disclosed for providing a distributed processing element unit that is capable of quickly and efficiently accessing each processing element by using a temporary subscriber identification number that contains embedded address information for the processing element. Subscriber records and application software programs are located within the processing elements to avoid having to send message traffic over the network requesting such information and to avoid the use of a centralized database server. In one advantageous embodiment of the invention, the processing element unit is a visitor location register.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to mobile communication networks, and more particularly to systems and methods for providing distributed processing element units in mobile communication networks. Background technique [0002] There are currently more than 300 million users of cellular phones and other wireless devices worldwide. A significant portion of these wireless devices are being used as "data pipes" (ie, voice traffic is not a primary function). In the United States, cellular service providers, Regional Bell and National Long Distance Carriers, offer cellular services. Intense competition has driven the price of cellular services down to the point where most people can afford it. [0003] The current generation of cellular phones is primarily used for voice conversations between a user device (or wireless device) and another party over a wireless network. A small number of wireless devices are digital devices, such as personal digital...
