Problems solved by technology

However, fusion welding has its limitations, as it can be expensive, or even impossible to produce large joints when access is difficult
Brazing also has its limitations, for example in that it can be difficult to properly apply or even determine the most suitable filler metal
TLP welding is beneficial when joining dissimilar materials, but has its limitations
For example, it is often difficult to find a suitable intermediate layer, and when large gaps are to be filled, or where relatively large joints are to be formed, the method is really not suitable for producing joints

Second metal component 12 is in contact with melt inhibiting composition 14 on surface 15 at contact point 16 . For the illustrated second metal component 12 , the first protrusion 28 is in contact with the melt inhibiting composition 14 at a contact point 16 and the second protrusion 29 is in contact with the melt inhibiting composition 14 at another contact point 116 . The first metal part 11 is made of a metal element, such as an iron-based alloy. Further examples of suitable metal elements from which the first metal part 11 can be made are given below. The second metal part 12 is also made of a metal element, which may be the same metal element as that used to make the first metal part 11 . exist figure 1 In , the first metal part 11 and the second metal part 12 have not yet joined.

Abstract

A method for joining a first metal part (11) with a second metal part (12), the metal parts (11, 12) having a solidus temperature above 1000 DEG C. The method comprises: applying a melting depressant composition (14) on a surface (15) of the first metal part (11), the melting depressant composition (14) comprising a melting depressant component that comprises phosphorus and silicon for decreasing a melting temperature of the first metal part (11), bringing the second metal part (12) into contact with the melting depressant composition (14) at a contact point (16) on said surface (15), heating the first and second metal parts (11, 12) to a temperature above 1000 DEG C, and allowing a melted metal layer (210) of the first metal component (11) to solidify, such that a joint (25) is obtained at the contact point (16). The melting depressant composition and related products are also described.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to methods of joining a first metal part to a second metal part using a fusion inhibiting composition. The invention also relates to melt inhibiting compositions and products comprising joined metal parts. Background technique [0002] Today there are different joining methods for joining metal parts (metal objects or metal workpieces) made of metallic elements, including different elemental metals and different metal alloys. Said metal parts have a melting temperature of at least 1000°C due to the metal elements or alloys from which they are made, which means that metal parts cannot be made of, for example, pure aluminum or different aluminum-based alloys. Some examples of metals from which metal parts can be made are generally iron-based, nickel-based and cobalt-based alloys. [0003] One general method of joining such metal parts is fusion welding, which is a method in which the metal in the metal parts, with or witho...
