[0130] The present invention relates to an improved premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) engine and control steps for controlling the engine in such a way that the engine is optimized for maximum efficiency while minimizing emissions . For this purpose, PCCI refers to any engine or combustion process in which 1) a substantial portion of the fuel is sufficiently premixed with air to form a combustible mixture throughout the charge at ignition and throughout combustion; and 2) Combustion starts by means of compression ignition. PCCI also relates to any compression ignition engine or combustion process in which the fuel and air are premixed long before ignition. Therefore, the fuel injection timing does not significantly affect the ignition timing of the fuel / air mixture in a PCCI engine.
